Justin Losee Trusts Mossy Oak Camo to Hunt Elk Successfully

Today I always try to stand in front of a tree when an elk is coming to me. Then when the elk is in bow range I want to already be at full draw, pointing my bow right at the bull. When he presents the shot, all I have to do is barely touch the mechanical release on the string.

Controlling Weeds Around Seedlings

So you’re considering planting a few tree seedlings this season, or already have some in the ground, but want them to have the best chance at fast growth and early and abundant production of fruits and nuts? Aside from protecting your seedlings with tree tubes (also known as tree protectors) and applying fertilizer, you’ll need to provide some form of weed control and/or mulch. Here are your best options:

The Wind Is Justin Losee’s Friend When He Hunts Elk

For me, elk hunting is like a chess game. I try to get into a bull elk’s head to make him think I’m coming after him, and that I anticipate his moves. An older bull elk is a very-intelligent animal and knows when another bull elk is coming to him and ready to fight to take the herd bull’s harem. That herd bull wants to know all he can about the bull that’s challenging him

Justin Losee Fights Elk

I believe that until you get in to the bull’s house (120-150 yards from him), he is not really concerned about you. But by bugling and going straight to that bull, I will let the bull know that I’m in attack mode, and he is either going to fight me or move his cows away from me.

Kelly Hicks’ Backyard Mule Deer Buck

During the general rifle season, the mountains near my home are full of red and orange, with hunters standing on about every ridge. My neighbor Rush had wanted me to guide him on a mule deer hunt, so I told him to be at my house before daylight, and we’d go to a public-hunting area. I was confident he could take an animal there. The next morning, we arrived at the top of the mountain,

Kelly Hicks’ One-Hour Mule Deer Hunt

The mountains behind Salt Lake City in Utah are called the Wasatch Mountains. If you get an archery season tag, the State of Utah offers what is called a Wasatch front extended deer hunt. The extended season is because these mountains are so close to Salt Lake City and home a large mule deer population. The deer during the winter month, go down to the suburbs around Salt Lake City, get hit by cars and

Kelly Hicks Didn’t Know What a Whitetail Deer Looked Like

I always hunted mule deer, I grow up in town called Mountain Green near Morgan, Utah, and I started hunting with my BB gun as soon as I could walk. There was a stream behind the house where I could catch fish all day long, and I stayed in the woods or on the water as far back as I could remember. My mom had a big bell in the back yard, and she would

How Kelly Hicks Hunts Mule Deer and Elk and Guides Other Hunters

Kelly Hicks of Bountiful, Utah, is a hunter of opportunity. Each season he buys mule deer tags and elk tags. Then when he has the opportunity to take either a nice mule deer buck or a nice bull elk, he’ll be able to harvest these animals, because he finds both species in the same places. Hicks has been a Mossy Oak Pro for the past 3 years.

What You Should Tip Your Elk Guide

One of the questions I'm most often asked is, “What do you tip the guides?” Before I go on a hunt, I’ll ask my outfitter, “What does the guide expect for a tip?” Occasionally, we have people who hunt all week with us, and they don’t tip. I believe those people are just not aware of how the system works, or how a guide, a cook or a wrangler gets paid. My rule of thumb

Why You Can Count on Your Guide to Make Up for Your Mistakes

I've often been asked, “What equipment do you take when you guide that most hunters forget?” When you're doing your interviews with your potential guide, learning that the guide may have extra equipment that you’ve forgotten to bring is important. I've guided more than 100 hunters to elk in the last 20 years, and I know what elk hunters often forget. However, we do send an equipment list out to all our hunters telling them

Where to Set Up When Bowhunting in October

By Heath Wood October is one of my favorite months to hunt whitetails from a saddle. The leaves are changing, temperatures are beginning to cool, and bucks are becoming increasingly active as the rut approaches. But October hunting also requires hunters to recognize that deer movement is changing throughout the month. One of the greatest advantages of saddle hunting is the mobility it provides. Before making the switch, I often found myself sitting in a
