Tips I've Learned from Mentoring Turkey Hunters

With children, I've found that the children pay more attention to me and are more willing to do what I ask them to do than they are with their parents. My kids never listen to me, but they always listen to their uncle. So, I try to be like kids who hunt with their favorite uncle. The one thing I'm conscious of is allowing children to fail.

A Turkey Hunting Memory That Lasts for Two Lifetimes

I try to create hunting memories that will last a lifetime. If I'm successful, that memory will last for two lifetimes. Here’s what I mean. If I guide a person to the first turkey he or she ever has taken, or if I guide a person to his first deer, I’ll remember that hunt for my lifetime, and that person will remember that hunt throughout his lifetime. So, even though I only squeezed the trigger

Eight Trophy Gobblers in Two Years

I’ve mentioned earlier this week that one of the biggest reasons most turkey hunters don’t teach others to hunt turkeys is that they're afraid the people they’ve taught how to turkey hunt will go onto that same property and try to take the same turkey they’ve planned to take. However, this is the reason I hunt public lands, primarily state Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

3 Key Tips for Taking on Tom

There are so many unpredictable details that can make harvesting a springtime tom either easier or more difficult. We have to deal with weather, time of the season, hunting pressure and natural turkey biology just to name a few. While there are numerous important points that can mean the difference between an unused tag and a 25-pounder hanging on a limb by its spurs, the following three subjects are among the most vital.

I Teach and Guide Turkey Hunters - Here’s Why

I'm a project supervisor for a construction company. My company is very understanding when I need to take off to go and teach. Now, teaching people to turkey hunt is far more important to me than the time I spend turkey hunting by myself. I'm often asked, “Where does this drive to educate the world on how, where, when and what to hunt turkeys with come from?” My response is that I learned to teach

Philip Mailhiot Receives the Mentor of the Year Award

The greatest trophies a turkey hunter ever can take won’t be mounted on the wall, kept in a shoe box or put on display for all to see. The greatest trophy that a turkey hunter ever has is the memory of teaching others how to hunt and take turkeys. Philip Mailhiot of Westminster, Massachusetts, a Mossy Oak pro for 6 years, was the first person to ever be awarded the title of the National Wild

Passing on a Lifetime of Hunting Turkeys with Pat Reeve

I remember the first time I went hunting for spring turkeys. I was walking around in the woods during the spring with a gun in my hand, and it felt like I was doing something illegal. Because up until that time, when deer season was over, hunting season ended. So, even though I knew I was legally hunting, because I never had been able to hunt in the spring before, I kind of felt like

Hunting Minnesota’s May Gobblers with Pat Reeve

By the end of May, the woods will have greened-up. I believe that the turkeys are easier to hunt in May, because there's more foliage, leaves and bushes to hide behind. By the end of the season, most of the gobblers have bred most of the hens, but the gobblers are still searching for the last of the hens to breed, something that makes them easy to call. This is my favorite time to hunt,

What’s With The Beard?

One of the most prized possessions of many turkey hunters is their collection of beards and spurs from hunting adventures. Most turkey hunters can quickly recall where their biggest or best bird was killed and all the details that made the hunt. Spur length, weight, and beard length are all topics for bragging rights on these “kings of the spring.”

Pat Reeve on Why I Love Minnesota Gobblers

We are really blessed in Minnesota. Our turkeys aren’t nearly as call-shy as the turkeys in Alabama, Missouri and some of the other southern and midwestern states, because our turkeys don’t receive a lot of hunting pressure here in Minnesota. Our turkeys are also easier to call than in many other states, and our turkeys really gobble loud. Another thing I like about hunting Minnesota gobblers is a longbeard that’s 3 years old may weigh

Pat Reeve’s Role in Restocking Wild Turkeys in Minnesota

I went to college with the intentions of becoming a game warden. I majored in criminal justice with a minor in wildlife. But when I got out of college, no money or positions were available for new game wardens. At that time, the Minnesota DNR was involved in a turkey restocking program, and some of the funding was coming from the NWTF.

The Four Stages of a Turkey Hunter

The first stage that a hunter goes through, especially a turkey hunter, is to bag that first bird. The second stage is he wants to harvest so-many birds he can’t load them all in the back of his or her pickup truck. The third stage is he wants to harvest the biggest gobbler that’s ever been taken or perhaps take a Grand Slam or a World Slam. And, the fourth stage in turkey hunting is
