Mossy Oak’s Bottomland: Three Decades-Plus and Still Going Strong!

Brian McCombie

Mossy Oak’s Bottomland camouflage pattern was introduced to America’s sportsmen and women over 30 years ago. Bottomland was created by Toxey Haas, who literally took a handful of Mississippi dirt, sticks and leaves and fashioned them into an extremely lifelike hunting pattern unlike anything the world had seen.

Since then, millions of hunters have used Bottomland camo to break up their outlines and to blend into dark hardwood, flooded timber and tree stand environments. If the wildlife species can be hunted, Bottomland has helped hunt it!

A lot has changed across the hunting landscape the last three decades—but Bottomland is still going strong!

Every year, dozens of new hunting products come to market sporting the Mossy Oak Bottomland pattern. At the 2020 SHOT Show, held this January in Las Vegas, Nevada, we spotted numerous products featuring Bottomland, many more than we can cover here. But a few that caught our eye included:

Danner Recurve Boot

Danner Recurve Bottomland

With seven inches of height for ankle support and options available with Danner® Dry waterproofing, the Recurve will keep you in the woods and on the hunt longer, and drier, than ever before.

The Recurve also sports a breathable mesh lining, a nylon shank, and a TPU heel frame to enhance support, stability, and balance.  A Vibram® Recurve outsole with Megagrip technology features adaptive lugs and flex lines for superior grip in wet and dry terrain.

The 2020 Limited Edition Darton Deer Slayer Bow

Darton Deer Slayer Bow

The Darton Deer Slayer is a limited-edition bow built to specs by Cervicide owner Jimmy McKinney. The Deer Slayer model is built off the framework of Darton’s tried and true 3800 technology. This bow comes hand dipped in Mossy Oak Original Bottomland camouflage - and is not available anywhere else!

Improvements over the original 3800 technology include the latest Dual Sync Revision by Darton Archery, a patented design by Rex Darlington which allows for an adjustable draw length with increments all the way from 25-31 inches all without a bow press. Draw weight increments are from 30-70 pounds and allow this bow to fit a broad spectrum of archers.

The Darton Deer Slayer bow also boasts double laminated limbs for better performance, retention, and durability. A 33-inch axle-to-axle allows for stability without sacrificing dexterity for the tree stand hunter. A lower brace height of six inches allows for blistering speeds which have been clocked over 350 IBO, while offering minimal hand shock thanks to Darton’s attention to detail in the engineering process..

Savage Renegauge Shotgun

Renegauge Bottomland

Savage Arms’ first semi-automatic shotgun: the Renegauge. There are six version of the new shotgun, including the Renegauge Turkey editions available in Mossy Oak NWTF Obsession and Bottomland, both the Official Camouflage patterns of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Each turkey hunting model features a 24-inch barrel.

Renegauge Waterfowl editions are available in Mossy Oak Bottomland, the Official Flooded Timber Camouflage of Ducks Unlimited and Shadow Grass Blades, the Official Camouflage of Ducks Unlimited. The two waterfowl editions are available on 26- and 28-inch barrel options.

The Renegauge is chambered in 12-gauge only and is built for the field. Hunters will appreciate the fit and function of the three Renegauge models, which include several patented parts and designs—including the Dual Regulating Inline Valve (D.R.I.V.) gas system.

The D.R.I.V. system provides Renegauge with the inherent ability to regulate the gas that cycles the shotgun's action. Both low-brass target shells and magnum hunting shells will cycle the action with the same reliability and without any adjustment from the shooter.

This functionality is complimented by how easy Renegauge is to fit to the shooter. From comb height to length of pull, Renegauge can be adjusted to fit nearly every shooter in almost any situation. Avid wing shooters will love the way the Renegauge swings, and turkey and waterfowl hunters will trust it in the nastiest of conditions.

MSRP: $1,549.00.
