A Typical Dog Hunt for Deer in Central Florida

On a typical dog hunt, we will have certain hunters that will get up at 3 a.m. and check all of our game cameras to see if a buck has moved into a certain block of woods the night or the day before the hunt. They’re also searching for deer tracks crossing the roads they travel as they check the game cameras.

Hunting Deer with Hounds

Hunting deer with hounds is historically the way most Florida deer hunters hunt. We use hounds due to the very thick and abundant cover. Seeing a deer crossing through an opening and being able to get a shot at him is very rare. Florida has several WMAs that permit the use of hounds for hunting deer.

Simon Ellis's Best Florida Deer

The best buck I ever took in Florida was a 12 pointer that scored 121-5/8 inches that I harvested in 2015. I took that buck during gun season, but I had trail camera pictures of him from a year earlier. A buddy of mine had shot at this buck in 2014 but missed him. Although we put out trail cameras in 2015, we never got a picture of him.

Deer Hunting in Florida

Florida has three different deer seasons. South Florida, south of Highway 70, is our first season that usually starts the last week in July and is archery only. Our rut here in Florida is really mixed-up and starts at various times in the three different areas. So, this first season allows bowhunters to hunt the rut that often begins the last week of July in that section of the state.
