Game Management with Sprayers

Mossy Oak BioLogic’s Austin Delano could talk all day about effective game management with sprayers, but for this particular piece, Delano wanted to give a general overview about spraying techniques both to control weeds and grasses in food plots and proper fertilizer application.

“Perennial fields like clovers, chicory and alfalfa are big parts of most everybody’s food plot presence,” said Delano. “The key is to use herbicides to keep these fields free of weeds and unwanted grasses as both will compete directly with your food source. There are grass selective herbicides that control unwanted grasses in legumes like clover, beans, LabLab, alfalfa and peas. Then you have your broadleaf herbicides, which are a little different story. You really need to do some investigating into the specific broadleaf weed you’re spraying your plot for before applying a broadleaf deterrent. You also have your Roundup ready crops like corn, beans and even some alfalfa that are safe to spray Roundup over the top of. Probably the simplest and most economical spray, Roundup kills all weeds and leaves the crop intact. Plus, it can be used prior to planting to remove vegetation to make working the field with a disc or tiller much easier.

MEENGreen_ll“Fertilization is also important. This year we came out with a new product called M.E.E.N Green, and M.E.E.N stands for Maximum Essential Effective Nutrients. Basically, this product feeds your plants through the plant tissue with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as micro-nutrients that your typical bag fertilizers often lack. This water-soluble fertilizer is made to be put into a sprayer and can be put out when you’re spraying herbicides over your legumes or when burning down to get ready for planting.”
