North Carolina will have a lot of hunters come in from out of state for early bow season in hopes of taking a buck in the velvet, but I've never taken a buck in the velvet. Some of our club members enjoy hunting and taking velvet- antlered bucks. About 10 years ago, one of our members took a velvet-antlered buck that scored 140 inches.

A Typical Dog Hunt for Deer in Central Florida

On a typical dog hunt, we will have certain hunters that will get up at 3 a.m. and check all of our game cameras to see if a buck has moved into a certain block of woods the night or the day before the hunt. They’re also searching for deer tracks crossing the roads they travel as they check the game cameras.

Hunting Deer with Hounds

Hunting deer with hounds is historically the way most Florida deer hunters hunt. We use hounds due to the very thick and abundant cover. Seeing a deer crossing through an opening and being able to get a shot at him is very rare. Florida has several WMAs that permit the use of hounds for hunting deer.

Simon Ellis's Best Florida Deer

The best buck I ever took in Florida was a 12 pointer that scored 121-5/8 inches that I harvested in 2015. I took that buck during gun season, but I had trail camera pictures of him from a year earlier. A buddy of mine had shot at this buck in 2014 but missed him. Although we put out trail cameras in 2015, we never got a picture of him.

Deer Hunting in Florida

Florida has three different deer seasons. South Florida, south of Highway 70, is our first season that usually starts the last week in July and is archery only. Our rut here in Florida is really mixed-up and starts at various times in the three different areas. So, this first season allows bowhunters to hunt the rut that often begins the last week of July in that section of the state.

One of the best blacktail hunts I ever had was the buck I took last year, in 2016. I had been watching this buck for 4 years. We had trail camera pictures of him. We had gotten to know this buck so well that we had named him Tall Four, because he was a 4x4 buck.

In 2011, I took my best blacktail buck that was a 4x4 that scored 109 inches - a trophy blacktail. To be considered a trophy blacktail taken with a bow, a buck has to score at least 90 inches. This buck was beautiful. Because the areas we hunt are so thick, most of the time we hunt from tree stands. We especially enjoy rattling in bucks during the rut.

After we leave Texas and the enclosure elk hunt, I’ll be going to New Mexico to guide elk hunters for Mossy Oak. I’ll probably purchase a black bear tag to hopefully be able to take a black bear after the person I’m guiding fills his elk tag, depending on how many days are required to get my hunter the elk he wants to take with a bow.

My first hunt was on August 1, and I was guiding a bowhunter on a private land management program. The State of California, in conjunction with outfitters and landowners, has a program that allows the landowner and/or the outfitter to improve their lands for wildlife. Then the state allots the landowner or the outfitter a certain number of tags, depending on the amount of property that he or she has improved for wildlife.
