Cuz Once Did Mossy Oak’s PR

While I was filming people hunting, giving the footage to Will and selling Mossy Oak camouflage, Toxey called me down to his office one day. For about an hour, Toxey kept telling me why Mossy Oak needed to do PR. He said, “This is the way Ben Rodgers Lee from Alabama got his turkey call company started. We want to work with the outdoor press.”

Cuz Strickland, Will Primos and the Sears and Roebuck Video Camera

Just before I started working for Toxey Haas and Mossy Oak, a fellow named Will Primos from Jackson, Mississippi, was making turkey calls that he called a True Double-Mouth call for calling turkeys. Will was making those calls in a garage behind his house. About that same time, the first video camera that I ever saw or heard of arrived at the Sears and Roebuck store in Natchez, Mississippi.

How Ronnie “Cuz” Strickland Became Involved with Mossy Oak

When I discovered Mossy Oak camouflage, I was working in a sporting goods store in Natchez, Mississippi, and I was also writing a syndicated outdoor column titled, “Rolling around Outdoors.” One of my jobs at the sporting goods store was to attend the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show each year. Toxey hadn’t been in business but a few months when I met him at a SHOT show. I had my wife, Pam, with me.

30 Years of Mossy Oak: Bill Epeards

A friend of mine, Dick Kirby, the founder of Quaker Boy Calls, and I were friends for 40 years before he passed away. Dick called me one night and said, “Bill, there’s a new camouflage company called Mossy Oak. I'm wearing it now, and this stuff really works. Would you be willing to try it out?” I answered, “Sure.” So, within the next few days, I got a package of Mossy Oak clothing.
