I took my first turkey when I was 14. I was basically self-taught. No one ever took me turkey hunting. My dad didn’t hunt, so I always hunted by myself. My dad wanted to know that I knew how to handle a gun safely, then he more or less turned me loose in the woods to go find a turkey.

When I entered my first calling contest in 2009, I learned that the contest had an owl-hooting division. I quickly learned that my owl hooting was much better than my turkey calling, and I began winning owl-hooting contests and placing well in them. Be Prepared with Different Types of Turkey Calls

When I go into the woods, I’ll usually have one box call and two pot calls, either a glass and a slate or a slate and an aluminum. I want calls with different pitches, and I always carry about six mouth calls with me each day. I really love my mouth calls, but there are different times and various turkeys that won’t answer a mouth call that will answer a friction call.

On rainy days, I’ll hunt just like I do on sunny days with the exception that I know I won’t be able to hear a turkey gobble from as far away as I ordinarily will. Too, that turkey won’t hear me as easily. But I’ve found turkeys are still as vocal in a rainstorm as they are on a sunny day.

Why Do You Hunt Turkeys?

Why is the question everyone should ask themselves before they venture out on a turkey hunt. That’s not just in general but for each specific hunt. If you do not know the answer to that question, then how do you approach the hunt? My approach is ever changing depending on the situation, but I think about that approach before I go out. It allows me to be successful whether I shoot a turkey or not.
