Set Up Right to Take More Predators

When you start calling predators, especially in the East, you’ll see numbers of coons, gray foxes and red foxes. These predators feed on turkey eggs, quail eggs and ground-nesting game animals. If you remove a good number of these animals every year as well as coyotes, you can increase the numbers of turkeys, quail, song birds and upland birds on your property. Every now and then, you’ll get a bobcat.

By harvesting coyotes, foxes, bobcats, raccoons and possums, you can have more deer, turkeys, quail, pheasants, squirrels and rabbits. We all know the advantage of planting supplemental food plots, fruit trees, nut trees and shrubs for wildlife. We also selectively harvest our deer herds and provide minerals for deer and turkey. But one important component of managing your lands for more wildlife is reducing the number of predators on the properties.

In seminars, I’m often asked how I get permission to hunt the places I hunt. I tell them that I knock on doors and ask landowners. Landowners may have problems with bobcats, foxes, coyotes and/or raccoons. In other parts of the country like the Deep South, feral hogs also are viewed as predators and may be hunted all year, but they aren’t a big problem where I hunt.

Coyotes learn very quickly. If they’ve heard a rabbit-in-distress call enough, they won’t go to it anymore, so I change-up my calls. I also use a blackbird-in-distress call. Since predators like birds, when I use the sound of a prey species that other predator hunters aren’t using, I drastically increase my odds for taking predators.

Anytime a landowner is having a problem with coyotes killing and eating livestock, destroying his crops, coming too close to the family dog or killing his wildlife, I can come in and solve that problem for that landowner. I don’t charge for removing predators, because often landowners will invite me to hunt deer and turkeys on their land in exchange.
