Preparing New Property for Big Bucks

More hunters are realizing that you can produce high-quality bucks on small acreages like this new 120 acres I’ve just purchased. Another advantage to this property is that it’s very thick and overgrown without a very good tillage value. So this property is something that most people looking for land won’t buy. However, this past spring, we took three gobblers off the new land.

    Preparation for Bowhunting Deer

At the end of turkey season this year, we started planting every field we have with soybeans and corn in preparation for deer season. We probably have 50 acres of corn and between 100-120 acres of soybeans planted. In March, we planted our BioLogic Clover Plus to make sure that we had plenty of food for both deer and turkeys. The Tale of Taylor’s Turkey

My daughter, Taylor, has been hunting turkeys since she was 10 years old. She is 22 now. As always, Taylor and I hunted together this season. We went to Iowa, one of our favorite places to hunt. The Tale of Grandpa’s Stevens Shotgun

My Grandpa, Bill Ritter (my mother’s dad) had a Stevens shotgun that could always win turkey shoots. When I was 16 years old, my grandpa gave me that shotgun to go to shooting matches and compete with it. After Grandpa gave me the gun, I took the gun to a gunsmith and had the stock replaced, mounted a scope on the gun and had the barrel choked-down to be ready for the shooting matches we had around home.

Transitioning from Turkey Season to Deer Season

Probably one of my most memorable hunts this year was a hunt I made with my mom. My dad, Ralph Drury, passed away this year on March 16. All of us in the family wanted to make sure we kept my mom, Lucille Drury, as active as possible. So, I invited my sisters, Barb and Linda, 65 and 66 years old, up to hunt with my brother Terry and me. It was their first-ever turkey hunt. They are both retired, and we asked them to bring Mom with them so they all could hunt turkeys.
