    British Labrador Training Designations

We have three levels of training – started, finished and hunted dogs. A started dog is trained to basic obedience commands – sit, stay, heel and back. A finished dog will get all the training that a started dog is taught, plus, he’ll be able to respond to hand signals and make blind retrieves. A hunted dog will be able to do everything that the started and the finished dogs can do, but a hunted dog actually will go hunting with you and perform what he's learned under hunting conditions.

When the Hunter and the Dog Become One

We have a waiting list of people who want one of the pups we breed here at Mossy Oak’s GameKeeper Kennels. I'm often asked, “How many pups can Mossy Oak produce in a year?” We’re not about production. We don’t breed our females until they’re 2-3 years old. So, we've got a lot of young females that will come into our breeding program in the next several years. Right now, we only have four females we’re actively breeding. We won’t produce more than three litters of pups per female, depending on the health of the female.

The Demand for British Labs for Hunting

Watching a well-trained hunting dog perform the task he's been trained to do is like poetry in motion. The dog’s breeding and training go on display as the dog does the work he’s meant to do. Perhaps “work” is not the proper term. Maybe watching a dog enjoy the sport he’s trained for is a better way to describe the pleasure that a dog achieves when he does the tasks that are born and trained into him.

Why Raise and Work with British Labrador Retrievers for Hunting Dogs

Since Mossy Oak had experienced and knew British Labs and their fine qualities, and Bill Gibson had experience training British Labs, we felt they were a good breed of dogs with which to start our kennels. British Labs are hunting dogs, they have great dispositions, and they're bred and trained to be hunters’ companions.

    The Story Behind GameKeeper Kennels

Mossy Oak wants people to be able to live their best lives outdoors. We believe that one of the best ways to achieve that goal is to have a great field companion. We want to be able to touch people’s lives with high quality dogs. Mossy Oak feels that the relationship between the hunter and the dog is as big a part of being outdoors as hunting is.
