    100 Deer with a Bow

By the time I was 25, I had taken more than 100 deer with my bow. During that time Alabama’s deer herd had grown to gigantic proportions, and deer hunters who hunted with their bows and rifles could take a buck and a doe each day from October 15 until January 31.

One aspect of hunting with dogs that we've been able to take advantage of is the fact that dogs can’t see antlers. They run what they smell. Many times when dogs come on to our land running a deer, they may be running a doe, and we’ll see old smart bucks get up and sneak out of the woods so the dogs don’t find them. Then we’ll have an opportunity to take a mature buck that we may not have been able to take, if the dogs haven’t come onto our property.

    Hunting Club Management and Camaraderie

On the cattle farm property where we have 15 members, we have a clubhouse, and it’s nicer than many people’s homes. We have satellite TV, air conditioning, electric heat, a bunk room, kitchen, washer and dryer - making it a home away from home. Every morning we get up and cook breakfast, and we all come out and eat together. I think most of our members belong to that club as much if not more for the social aspect of the club as they do for the deer hunting that the club provides. Read More
