Levi Morgan: Tournament Archers and Bowhunters Are Adrenaline Junkies

Editor’s Note: Levi Morgan says, “I've been wearing Mossy Oak since I could walk, and I wear Mossy Oak on my TV show ‘Name the Game’ on the Sportsman Channel where I hunt a wide variety of game animals and also show tournament archery. I come from a bowhunting and competition archery background.” Morgan has built his reputation by winning some of the biggest archery tournaments in the world. He has proved to be consistent by winning the ASA (Archery Shooters Association) Shooter of the Year title for 8 consecutive years, breaking Jeff Hopkins previous record of 7 consecutive Shooter of the Year titles. Morgan also competes in the IBO (International Bowhunting Organization) and shoots in-the-field archery tournaments. Morgan shoots all the recognized disciplines of tournament archery, and he's an avid bowhunter.

The greatest feeling in the world happens to me when I have to shoot the last arrow in the World Championship and try to hit a spot on the target that’s about the size of a dime. That’s the most-satisfying feeling in the world. I also get that same feeling, when I'm bowhunting and a monster buck is coming in, and I have to pick the spot where I'm going to try and take him. I focus on that dime size spot where I want my arrow to hit. When I make that shot, that’s the greatest feeling in the world.

I’m an adrenaline junkie. I live for the excitement of the hunt. When a mature buck with large antlers is coming within bow range, I have to embrace the moment just before and during the shot, and I have to make the shot. I've learned not to fear the shot I’ve got to make, but to love the opportunity to test my skill and trust my equipment to perform perfectly at the moment of truth. If you're going to be successful as a target archer or as a bowhunter, the pressure of taking the shot has got to become your friend and not your enemy to consistently be successful. A true competitor lives for the moment of the do-or-die situation. I'm the quarterback with only 30 seconds left in the Super Bowl who knows he has to complete a 50-yard pass to win the game, goes to the coach and says, “Give me the ball.” All true competitors compete like this. They want to test all their training and all their practice, control their emotions and still deliver. So, my one piece of advice for bowhunters for this coming season is, “Love to live for the moment when you have to perform at your best. Embrace buck fever, and learn to shoot through it.”
