Country Music Artist Kristen Kelly Talks about Growing Up in Mossy Oak Country
Editor’s Note: The love of country music runs deep in the hearts of many in the Mossy Oak family. Selected as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country, Kristen Kelly is a country music singer/songwriter. She travels the country on her own tours and with other country artists like Rascal Flatts, Dierks Bentley and Brad Paisley. Kelly’s single “Ex-Old Man” hit the top 30 on the country music charts. She’s released a new single on May 27th “Kiss by Kiss.” Kelly says, “Just being able to sing well isn’t all that’s required to be a successful country music artist and business person.”
I was born and raised in Texas on 10 acres. At the end of our property, my dad dug out a tank – a small lake - and filled it with catfish. We would fish at the tank, go to the river and fish or travel to Lake Waco to fish. Dad also took me to his deer lease with him. I fell in love there with dove hunting. In the last couple of years, I’ve gotten a bow. Now my dream is to take a gobbler with my bow. Since I’ve been on the road performing, I didn’t get a chance to go this spring of 2014. But I’ve really got turkey fever.
I’ve been wearing Mossy Oak for several years. While I was on the road with Brad Paisley, I had an opportunity to meet Allison and Toxey Haas (the creator of Mossy Oak) and their boys. But I was wearing Mossy Oak long before I met Toxey. Mossy Oak works a lot with Brad Paisley. So, meeting the folks at Mossy Oak was just a natural thing to happen at some of our concerts.
I like Mossy Oak because the company isn’t just about clothing and providing clothing for outdoor people. Mossy Oak is a lifestyle like the one I was born into, and I’m really proud to be associated with the folks at Mossy Oak today as a ProStaff member. Mossy Oak has a ProStaff meeting in June, and I’ll be playing and singing for my fellow ProStaff members. I don’t just wear Mossy Oak when I’m out hunting. When I pull off my boots and sit around home, Mossy Oak is my favorite type of clothing for hanging out. The clothing is very comfortable, and I love wearing it. I want to be an ambassador for the Mossy Oak brand. I’m hoping to get more involved on some Mossy Oak hunts. I want to bring an awareness of the sport of hunting and the outdoors to a larger group through my relations with Mossy Oak.
