Hi,
I recently bought a Mossberg 500 from Academy Sports. I bought some bird shots for it because they were out of slugs. I went last weekend and finally purchased the slugs and went home last night to swap out shells and I cant get the shells to eject! I had them in the tube only and pumped it tostart ejecting and the first shell came out ok, the second she stays in the chamber and goes back and forth when I pump it. I put my finger in there to give the shell a little wiggle to maybe break it loose but nothing. The gun has never been shot before and the shells were brand new. Can someone please tell me how to get this shell out? Is there a different way to get the shells out of the tube instead of pumping it?
Thanks

Did you pull it back all the way to eject the shell? If yes you said it's never been shot.....take it back and get one that works.

Hey Button Buck . It's silly for someone to say go buy a 870. If you can't remove the shells on your own. I would suggest you take it to a gun shop for help. Did you clean your 500 before you loaded it? All gun manufacturers apply a heavy coat of rust inhibitor to protect it from rusting . So before you do anything you should remove the inhibitor with a gun cleaner. Than apply a light coat of oil. You don't have to be gentle when you eject a shell it's a pump gun , so give it a hard pump. I would also recommend a barrel cleaning tool , called a Tico Tool, It makes cleaning your new gun alot easier. Don't worry buddy once you get past this you shouldn't have any problems. I own a 500, 870, and a few years ago I bought a MOSSBERG 835 ulti mag deer , turkey combo. Mossberg makes great shotguns, and for the price you cant beat them. Good luck Button Buck . Let me know how you made out. fnsmith@rcn.com

Thanks fnsmith
I did not clean it before I loaded it. I did wipe the outside down a bit but nothing inside. To be honest with you, this is my first gun. I purchased it for home defense and family protection and that is really the only reason. I bought it because it was fairly cheap, short enough to hide and something about a shotgun I like more then a pistol. The problem I have now is, with it having a live round jammed in it, academy sports will not return nor let me bring it in to the store (guess i cant really blame them for not letting me bring it in.......haha). Let me ask you this, If I rough house the pump action a little bit ( maybe im not pumping it hard enough ) what are the chances of the shell firing? Reason I ask is because I DO NOT want this thing accidently firing off and yes I am smart enough not to touch the trigger while doing it I live in the city also so I cant just go out in the back yard and do it. Even though the shell is jammed I have my lock through the chamber so it cant fully engage but I still do not feel comfortable knowing the shell is in the chamber. Sorry for the long paragraph, I am just a little paranoid of it being like this.
Thanks
p.s. Thanks for not being a smarta** like this other douche!
p.s.s I was told that I would have to fire the round in order for the claw to let loose of the shell?

| I am hearing that you have a channel lock in the chamber. The round is not in the chamber and it is pulled out of the chamber in the follower. When pulled back far enough it should hit the extractor, a little metal piece that will eject it. The round fires when the bolt is forward and the shell is in the chamber. What you are describing is a shell back of the chamber. Is this correct? Yard

UPDATE
Thanks for the info! You have been more then helpful!
I actually went home last night and gave it a good hard pump and it finally ejected the shell like it should have. After unloading 5-6 shells I pumped it dry a few times, reloaded and ejected them all again and it worked perfectly! You think that maybe it was because after I bought it and took it home I never really pumped it any? I basicly took it out of the box, wiped it down a little, slapped the barrel on, loaded it, locked it and threw it in te closet. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the ammo. I think it would be alot more safe to stick with the buck shots I originally purchased.
Thanks again for your help!

| So let me get this straight, the shell is stuck to the bolt carrier which feeds into the chamber. If this is the case FnSmith is telling you right. Cycle the action hard make sure the weapon is on safe depress the slide release on the left side of the gun near the trigger. This allows you to cycle the gun without firing it. If this does not work then you may have a bad ejection pin which happens. You can still take the shell out buy pulling the action back opening the chamber and exposing the shell, just use your finger and pull the shell towards the opening it should come lose from the extractor. Also make sure you are using the right shell, if you are chambered just for 2 3/4 and you put a 3 inch shell in the gun this can happen. You can tell what your gun is chambered for buy looking on the barrel. Lets me know if this helps.

I had that happen to my 835. I took it to my local gunsmith and he fixed it with killing my wallet.
