Well if I ever get to kill another deer I'd like to tan that hide, you know because folks are trying to ban bowhunting and everything. Once deer season is over I'll be coyote hunting and I also wanted to tan a hide or two. If you got the pointers, pass them on! I'll be glad to use them!!

No problem with that, I do have a european mount service here in Georgia. I tan hides for a few customers that bring in there fox and yotes whole for me to do the skulls for. I tan all my deer hides also. I tend to keep my tanning on the back burner since I sold my flesher and have to do it by hand. I specialize in european mounts, no boiling here. I would love to share my skills and techniques

| I like the looks of the euro mounts and have one but its actually of a skull that I found. How do u go about doin it or what pointers could ya give to a good ole country boy to make it a lil easier. Tried it on a yote skull and a ground hog skull soakin them in peroxide but didnt turn out all that great.

What I've done to a bear skull was to skin and trim off all you can. Then fill a bucket of water and place the skull in it. It's best to do it in the summer so it doesn't freeze. About a month later dump half of it out, take a look at it and pick if you want. Fill it back up and give it another month. Repeat till it is practicly clean, you may need to pick at it some by hand. The teeth will fall out so watch for them in the bottom when you're done. You will have to glue them back in. I was told bear should be de-greased so soak it in amonia for a few weeks. To whiten it I was told several ways but what I ended up doing is put hydrogen peroxide in a squirt bottle, spray it down and place in the sun. Repeat till white. Worked good for me.

Either way you look at it, there are 3 basic ways to get the meat off the bone, this is true for almost everything except fish and gators. You can macerate in a bucket like was described for the bear, you can use dermestid beetles like I do to get deer heads clean in 2 days, or you can boil. I do not reecomend the boiling way, 2 reasons. First off you can actually damage the skull, it will shrink (no boone & crochets get done this way) You can set the grease in them and never get them white. After what ever method you chosen to clean the skull is done, then comes the degreasing. Its best done at about 110 to 120 deg. water with dawn. You can also soak in straight ammonia (clear) if you want. I use the ammonia soak first and then go to the dawn/water way. it can take 4 to 6 weeks for some deer, 6 months for bear and hogs. you know when its done degreasing by the clear water and white bone when done. Now comes the peroxide, there are 3 types readily availible to whiten. 3% in the brown bottle, 12% (40 volume for hair) and 27% Baqacil oxydizer (pool supply store). if its a bear you can just soak the whole skull in it, 3 days for 3%, 2 days for 12%, 24 hours for 27%. You can also make up a paste with the 12% and basic white like you do hair with and apply to the skull (keep off antlers) wrap it in seran wrap and keep it warm under a heat lamp for 4 to 6 hours. Be carefull with 27% peroxide, it will blind you and burn your skin, keep all metal out of peroxide. I can go on and on, this is just a rough description. There are many details not covered here. I do 40 to 50 deer heads a year with about 20 odd coyote, beaver, fox, coon thrown in.
