I was shopping for .22's a few years back for squirrel hunting, and I decided on the .22mag in case I ever wanted to go coyote hunting. I can't justify spending the $ on a centerfire for that purpose since I wouldn't get much use out of it. I bought a NEF single shot in .22mag and it has proven itself as a squirrel killer.
It loves the Winchester Supreme 34gr JHP rounds, but I've got it sighted in for 40gr Winchester JHP's since they're a little more forgiving on the squirrels if I don't make a good head shot. I know the gun will put a bullet in a coyote's head at 75yards (if the thing stands still...). My question is whether this round is mean enough to put in the shoulder of a coyote, and at what range?
Thanks for any help,
rw

I think if you get them in within 100 yds and made a perfect lung/heart shot it would work...I myself would want more power! I plan on using a 7MM or 25-06 this winter...

I'd think a 22 mag will be plenty for a 100 yard vitals shot. Some tracking may be needed. Personally I would prefer something a with a little more powder to extend the shooting range.

I agree with the above. At 100 yards it should be fine but I would want something where I can reach out and touch something a little farther.

Yeah, I do realize that my gun is a little on the whimpy side for what I'm going to be doing. I'll just have to hope they get within range. Like I said, I can't afford to go out and buy another gun for as little as I'd use it. It would be nice to get ahold of a 22-250 though... My friend that I'll be hunting with has a .223 so I figure I'll do the calling and he can do the dirty work. If they get in range though I'll give it a whirl.
The two of us went out hunting all day last winter and didn't even see one coyote. I went out duck hunting the next day and wouldn't you know it, a coyote came all the way across the field listening to my duck call and stared at my decoys down in the ditch! I wasn't comfortable blasting him with my steel 4's as far as he was, so he got to trot away. Go figure!
We'll see what the 22mag will do. I'll let you all know!

| I live in Michigan we were allowed to use 22rimfires for deer hunting. I killed a good buck with a 22mag. using 40 gr.fmj.ammo.we are nolonger allowed to use rimfire on deer. I personly use a Savage with a bull barrel and a Basix trigger with Win.40gr.hps I have killed a number Coyotes with this combo.More gun is always better!

| The small little 17hmr is a great round to put into a coyote....I have even killed out to 150 yards with a vital shot. Man the 17 goes in small but puts a big ol hole in the exit. Persoannly me favorite is the 223 packs a little more punch. Good luck out there guys and merry christmas
