I got a great deal on a T/C Omega this past weekend at D.ick's Sporting Goods, and am wanting to try one of the cleaner propellants out nowadays. Does anyone have experience with American Pioneer Powder and Triple 7? I'm wondering how they compare to each other, and to Pyrodex. Do you use the same number of grains as you would of Pyrodex? How well do the wedge shaped pellets from American Pioneer Powder work compared to the cylindrical pellets from Triple 7 and Pyrodex? Do they ignite adequately?

Just trying to sort everything out in advance. I don't plan to use this gun until next fall.

I use 100 grains of triple 7 pellets in my T/C Encore and I get good groups and clean up is great. Very little powder residue in my barrels and I think I have shot upwards of 15 rounds (range-time) without cleaning. I use T/C's cleaning products, and they are great. Barrel lube patches and pre-saturated barrel cleaning patches.

After every hunt I unload the gun at my house and check the powder blocks for any signs of moisture and if there is any I discard them and re-clean the gun and reload for the next day. I had 1 misfire last year from me hunting all day in the rain then not checking at night and hunting again in the AM. That is why every time I come in I unscrew the breech plug drop out the charges and check them. Then I push the bullet out through the front, replace the breech plug, add powder and bullet then I put it back in the case.

I started out using black powder, which is a royal pain. I graduated to Pyrodex which was definitely a step up. 777 is a breeze to clean up. That's what I'm using now. I posted a question a few posts back about it's shelf life...

A friend of mine tried using the American Pioneer Powder sticks with CVA Powerbelt bullets. He had a couple of strange fires. I don't know if the loose-seating Powerbelts didn't create a tight enough seal for the wedge-shaped powder pellets and they weren't burning completely or what. It looked like the front pellet was bouncing downrange like a tracer! Still don't know exactly what it was, but it happened twice.

Since then he's gone to the Hornady SST bullets/sabots and two 777 pellets with very tight patterns at 100 yards.

You've got a great gun. Take some time in the off-season to try a couple different loads and find the one your gun likes. And remember to be consistent in your loading/cleaning. You should be set by next fall! Good luck!

I used 100gr. pyrodex pellets for the last 4 years and have had great results, this year I switched to 100gr. 777 pellets that are supposedly cleaner burning, but I have'nt really seen a huge difference between the two. Still gotta do a bit of scrubbin to get em clean with either one..

Hi guys and gals I am new here but not to black powder. I have several flintlocks in which I only use real black powder for ignition reasons. I have a sidelock percussion in which I tried BP, Pyrodex loose and APP. The real BP worked fine, the pyrodex gave delayed ignition at times, the APP although very clean gave me hangfires and no ignition several times. I also have an inline, a Knight Bighorn which is not converted to the 209 ignition. I have a choice of #11 caps or switch nipples and shoot musket caps. I have only used real BP in it and it gets dirty but shoots extremely fine. My experience with APP left me with a very bad taste in the mouth. Oh you are not supposed to eat it!! Lol. It seems that the #11 caps are not hot enough to properly ignite the 2F river gravel I was trying. It also was weaker than even BP. This was from perceived felt recoil and low pattern at 50 yds. When I upped the load 20 grains the bullets hit in the BP pattern and recoil was about the same. But since I got so many hangfires and several no fires I promptly gave that stuff away. I have read that some people had bad experiences with APP sucking moisture like a sponge.

I switched to triple seven a couple years ago from pyrodex pellets, and found they do burn cleaner. I shot 150 grains of triple 7 and a hornady 240 grain sst sabot. Dropped a buck at 246 yards. This year after a lot of research on pressures that these produce and only a few manufactures that have actually tested 150 grains of pellets, I elected to go back to 100 grains of powder even though I could hold good groups with 150 grains, it was the fear factor. The current productions that have tested are Knight Disc Rifles, Thompson Omega and Encore rifles, and the Savage 10ML-II.

But, all in all I would choose triple 7.
