Well I just got started up and thought I'd post a pic of my last Rio of the season.
I took this bird on 05/03/08 one day before the end of Shot-Gun season. Here in Ca. we have a Archery season I was going to hunt, but as this was my third bird of the year it looks like I'm done till fall. I hunted for 6 hours in a blind with a bow in my hand that morning, but it just wasn't to be. The closest anything got that morning was a group of hens and a big Tom who at 100 yards out escorted his hens away from my decoys.
Well I ended up getting out of the blind and heading for a different area found a nice set up area and did a little calling and there he was. A long ways away, but a good hot gobble none the less.
So with no decoys,I gave three yelps every time he gobbled to keep him coming my way,He was a wise old bird and took the long way to getting to me with more than an hours wait till I first saw him at 100 yards,I had called in a Bob-Cat that on it's way to me,I saw it on a rigde just over the draw next to me,but he busted up a hen,no doubt sitting on her eggs,I never even new she was there till he took after her and she went crazy for about a minute, and then silence,I'm guessing he got her because he was kept busy as I had only brought my tom in about 1/2 way at that point. When I first saw him at 100 yards I a pleasantly surprized,Nice tom,at about 60 yards he started to fluff up and boy was I worried he was about to let loose of a big'ol Gobble, then with-out gobbling he relaxed and kept coming, knowing my Brownig and the full-strut choke and ammo combo I use I was ready to take him at this point befor he did gobble and alert that cat. So after a few more waddels my way I took him at the 40 yard mak,I wasn't taking any chances of MR.Cat messing up a good hours worth of work.
