well i am moving to Fort Collins in May of this year and i am new to elk hunting. I can't wait to do it but i really am not sure on what i'll need, what the specific tags and points i will need are and if i'll even have a chance to hunt next year since i'll have to wait for citizenship. I still need to do reasearch on the gmu's and all the colorado regs, but if you guys have any info that will help me out in doing so that would be much appreciated. I also wanted to know what is an all around good gun for elk and big game in general. I was thinking of picking up a 7mm mag from a guy i know but i was going to wait to get some outsider info and see if there was a better choice. ALSO, i have too many questions, haha, what is the most common camo pattern used up at 9000 feet? I currently live in Washington state, in the seattle area so elk hunting over here is limited. I do a Mule Deer hunt everyyear with my dad and all of his brothers on public land and we do pretty good. I've harvested a few good bucks and a doe when i was 15. But now im moving out with my girl to colorado and want to really do some hunting. Thanks again guys and i hope to hear from someone!

First off, Welcome to the forum! I think you'll find this a good place to be.
Don't know if the 7-mag is big enough for elk. Don't have them in N.C. but someone here
will be able to answer your question on that. A good place to start on the regs
should be the state's DNR or WRC site. That will give you the dope on permits and what
ever else along those lines you need to know.
Now about the best camo pattern at 9000' , I'm thinking something that will
accomodate a pretty good size oxygen tank!!!

I have a couple of buddies that rifle hunt elk in Colorado. One uses a 7mm mag and the other uses a .300 win mag. They tell me the 7mm does just fine, but like always, where you hit the elk is the main thing! When I bowhunt in colorado I like the mossyoak breakup. Seems to work just fine for me. The website you want is Colorado Dept. of Wildlife. Enjoy your hunts!

Welcome to Mossy Oak forums!
If your not going to be there till May your going to miss the cost reduction of being a resident this year. That doesn't change the fact that you can apply for a non-resident tag, just have to write a bigger check The Colorado DOW web site will give you all the details, http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/.
These guides are a great place to start. http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/HuntingGuide/WestSlopeHuntingGuides.htm
If your going to apply you better get reading and writing as the application deadline is nearing fast, April 1 (don't be fooled ). If not there are still OTC tags. Don't forget about a hunter safety course permit, you'll need one.
As for a rifle, anything above a .24 cal is legal. I liked the results a 7 mag gave me last year. Just know your rifle and place your shots.
I miss vacation at 10K+, life is great up there. Have fun and let us know how you make out!

7mm Mag should work fine. Last time out we had a 7mm Mag, .300 Ultra Mag and a .338 Mag, we all got elk. Get in shape the mountains are tough on legs and lungs. We shot a couple of elk at around 12,000' and it was alot harder walking down than it was walking up. You should be able to get an over the counter non resident tag for elk and mule deer if you don't have residency in time. I wore the same camo I wear in MN as I had to wear orange over it anyway.
Good luck with the move and the hunting.
