Need some advice on a good 30/06 rifle for deer. I can't put
a whole pile of jack in one and would like to find one that
don't have a scope or at least has open sights. A combo
is ok too.

Look at Savage for open sights.... Model's 110,111,112 series.
Savage makes a very accurate rifle. for under $500.00 bucks.

I would look at the remington 700 or the winchester 70 both are great models and you can't go wrong.
I have a rem. 700 and love it. its one heck of a gun.

I would get a Remington 700. Being that it's now 2008 and after deer hunting season, I've seen some pretty good deals on the 700's in .30-06. In fact, check your local Walmart if they still sell firearms, I know ours was selling them for around $270 for a while.
I had a Rem 700 in .30-06. I killed one deer with it but parted with the rifle as I preferred .308 and needed the funds.

Sounds like tne 700 is a good rifle. Thanks for the heads up Cracker, 2 of the three
"Wallys" we have around here still sell guns. And if the same is true as with the ammo prices,
one location will have theirs for less than the other.
Let ya'll know something when I get to town again cause that's a good thing to
keep in mind if your town or county has more than one Wal-Mart.

I own two 30-06 rifles myself.
My favorite is the Winchester 670A and I also have the Savage 111. Both are great shooters. The Savage is a value for the money.
