I have never used mechs. I am thinking of using them for moose. Is the fear of them that they will not open, or that they break? If they do open and don't break they sure offer alot more cut than fixed blads.

where still the mighty Moose wanders at will.

Go for the Grim Reaper Razortip 100/125 gr broadheads, they are the most wicked head I have ever seen. I shot a deer this year with one and it exited out through her shoulder and just completely shattered it. The best part was no broken blades, no bent blades, and the blades opened beautifully because both the entrance and exit wounds were HUGE! Check them out http://www.grimreaperbroadheads.com/

I've been using mechanicals for quite a few years now. Never had an issue with one not opening. I have had times where the blades would bend. IMO it didn't effect how far the animal went before going down. However I would reccommend selecting a broadhead that has a decent blade thickness, something like .035". I have been using Wasp Jackhammers and they've never failed me.

If you shoot thru mesh material in blinds the mechanicals are out.

I like Magnus Stingers, dropped my deer in their tracks. Also, if they ever break, save 'em up and ship them back in the package and they will send you a new set free

I shoot and like mechanicals. I use several of the Rocket lineup.

That said....for MOOSE...get you a good fixed blade.

The good thing about the Grim Reapers is they are designed so you can shoot them closed as a mechanical, or you can open them up and the blades lock so you can shoot them as a fixed blade head.

Also, you can shoot mechanicals through mesh netting on a ground blind without any effects of blades opening.

You can shoot SOME mechanicals through mesh blind windows...

I have used spitfire 100 gr mechanicals for a while and really like them. Grim reapers are very similar and a great head. As for toughness, I was skinning deer at a processing center for a friend when a guy brought in a young buck he had shot in the back of the head with a spitfire. The blades opened and SLICED through the skull into the brain pan. We removed the broadhead and it was in perfect condition and still operational. No bent or broken blades.

Dad and Bro took bear last year with NAP Shockwaves (spitfire with big chisel head essentially) and they worked great. Dad's blew right through the bear shoulder.

Myself? I can have everything hitting together, so I use fixed for larger game.
I don't have to change my sights for anything I shoot. (FP, Fixed, Mech, SGH)

Definitely mechanicals for turkey though, for the blade diameter.
And you're not as concerned about pass through. In fact, it is good to have the arrow stay in them. Makes chasing them down that much easier if you don't nail them to the grown or slice their neck off.
