Hey everyone. New to the group and was wondering if anyone has any experience with lankas labs. They are a type of pointing lab but many people use them for waterfowl as well. Just trying to get some feed back from an outside source.

I had a discussion with my vet about a year and a half ago about "pointing labs". He said that while a lab can be "trained" to point (i.e. an older dog) it is not in their genetics to do it naturally. He said that is why they are called Retrievers. He advised me to be careful in dealing with pointing lab breeders if I was getting a puppy because it probably means they have a pointer somewhere in the bloodline. AKC breeders groups labs in "show" versus "field". Show dogs tend to be physically larger with the block head and larger shoulders and have a more calm demeanor. The field labs tend to be smaller in size but are much more aggressive and excited when put to work. I have a 16 month lab that we bought as a family dog that has a field champion (grandfather) on one side and a show champion (great-grandmother) on the other and he's not worth a crap . Just kidding. He a good dog and smart as heck. He just will never be aggressively used in the field. I take him when I go shoot and he is not gun shy but the only retrieving he will do is fetching the tennis ball. Take a look at Little River Labs (Alabama), Tealbrook's (Florida) and Sumo's Labs (Atlanta Ga.) as they are known for quality dogs also your state should have a lab owners association that has more information.

One more thing there is no such thing as a silver lab. Labs with a silver coat are part Weimeraner. The natural colors are Yellow (a fox red lab is part of the yellow spectrum), black and chocolate. I looked at the site and having silver labs would make me question the quality of the dog in terms of bloodline even though some will have papers. It does not mean they would not be a great dog, it just means there is a Weimeraner in the bloodline. Most lab puppies with a traceable heritage will start about $1000.00 and up. A field train 2 year old will cost anywhere from $3k - $5k possibly more.

In regards to Pointing Labs....check out our Testimonial page and infact e-mail the owners who sent them...we have 6-7wk old puppies pointing wings, so I would assume that is a natural instinct since they are to young to be trained. We have groups who come into Atwood to hunt, ask them if the dogs Point...infact, several of them had the pleasure seeing 3 of our Pointing Labs Point and honor one another. As for the question of a silver lab? It is a diluted chocolate gene, just like a white lab is a diluted Yellow gene. All of our dogs are DNA and all of our dogs are AKC registered as Labradors, if there was a cross breeding AKC would not allow us to register them.
Here are some of the most current e-mails from some owners of our Poinitng Labs:
Mike,
If you remember me, I picked out Max from you the first of August and picked him up in my plane end of August?
I took Max (7 months old) out for his first ever Pheasant hunt today to see if my hard work has paid off. There are 7 Pheasants in this photo, only one was not assisted by Max, My daughter kicked him up. Max Pointed 9 Pheasants and would not flush until we were right there or I said get em up. We crippled two, and one of those was just a hair faster. I couldn't be more happier with him, and I am glad I found you, and chose one of your dogs.
I should have had my camera out in the field to take the pointing pics, but then my daughter would have had all the fun shooting them.

Mike,
I just wanted to send you an e-mail and some pics. of the 2 pups we got from you last May, 9 months old now. They are the best dogs I've ever had, smart, easy to train, and good hunters. They are very birdy and both point birds as you can see in the pics. I plan on taking them to a pheasant club next month. Anyway, thanks again and Happy New Year!, Bruce Douglas. brudoug@sbcglobal.net

Mike:
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on Abbey's progress. She is doing extremely well. We have probably finished the wild bird season and will continue to work with released birds to develop her skills. She has a very stylish point and it is exciting to hunt behind her. I enclosed some recent pictures and hopefully on the next trip back we will have time to stop and visit. Hope this finds you and yours doing well. Abbey is 10months old.

Mike-
Shad wanted me to e-mail you some current pictures of our puppy (Cali) we got from you in April. She is now 9 months old, stands about 2 feet tall, weighs just over 50 lbs and is still our lap dog! She is still pretty little but Shad says she is a good bird hunter. She will retreive about everything except geese (they are just a little too big for her right now) and points anything!
Well hope is going good with you, your family and business!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,
Shad & Nicole Wiese

P.S. If you have problems opening the attachments please let me know.
We say she is the cutest Palisade Fire Department mascot ever!

Mike:
Just a Christmas Hello to tell you how much we love our little girl. She is the best little dog anyone ever had. I have inserted a picture of her under the Christmas tree. She is a little the worse for wear; she was out hunting in cattails and her nose and eyes are a little raw but healing nicely. Everyone that sees her tells us how beautiful she is.
This is her first year hunting. Last year she was in season when we started on pheasants after deer hunting. On one of the last hunting trips she was hunting with big males with lots of experience and was the only dog to break ice to retrieve a pheasant. She is a trooper and is crazy to hunt, but is also the ultimate house dog that is never naughty.
