I voted for the .260 Remington even though it's a variation (wildcat) of the .308 Winchester.
I own several calibers but my 30/06 has killed more than 21 deer along with a pile of other game. I love to shoot 130 grain Barnes X and Varget powder. They hit like a regular 180 grain bullet!
I can also load it with 165 grain for bear or up to 220 grain for Grizzly. The 06 even shoot accelerator rounds with a .223 in a sabot! SMOKIN'!!!
The reason I picked the .260 though, is it's capability from woodchucks to big bucks and everything in between. (pluss it's a lot easier on the old shoulder now)

30.06 I find more folks use that and that comes in handy if you forget your ammo in camp!
My first deer was with a 30.30 but with the 30.06 it has been rare for me if the deer go any yards after I shoot them. I think I remember one or two that may have gone under 50 yards but most just drop where I hit 'em

I may try that new Hornady LEVERevolution Rifle 30.30 in 160gr. for 2008 deer season
TrailCamMan (10/17/2007) I have a Remington 30-06 and love it. To me it is just the best all around big game caliber out there for areas around here. Loaded with 150 gr. core-lokt hollow points and it gives you the deadliest mushrooms in the woods.
I grew up using a 30-30 so they will always be good in my book. The 30-30 has probably brought down more deer than any other caliber.
That's my gun! Rem 700SS with synthetic stock and Leupold 3 x 9 x 50MM matte and a Quake Claw Sling and I am good to go! Bullet type I discussed above.

For years I hunted with a Rem M700 in 25-06(great caliber).Hunted everything from groundhogs to deer with it.For the past 5 years,I've been hunting with a Browning A-Bolt Micro-Hunter in 7mm/08 topped with a 2x7 Nikon scope. This caliber literally flattens the deer!It seems to really like 140gr Ballistic tips

All of my gun hunting untill this year has been on state owned land here in CT. That means shotgun only. This year I fianlly got a piece of private land big enough to use the rifle. I opted for a 45/70 barrel for my Encore. Where I hunt it would be rare to be able to get a shot past 100 yards, and I love the big bore knock down power. I have yet to take a shot at an animal. Next Saturday is my last day rifle hunting and I hope to christen the 45/70 barrel.

Great looking rifle Tedicast... I like that muzzle break. I bet that thing is pretty loud though, eh?

Yeah...It's a bit loud. But it really tames the recoil. The gun is super light with the composite stock, and the barrel cut down to 18", but the recoil is very manageable.
