I'm just curious what everyone hunts with that is allowed to hunt with a rifle for deer.

Pick your favorite caliber for deer on the poll and then tell us why you like it, who makes it, post a pic if you want, etc. (Examples of why it suits you: Terrain, distance, brush, recoil, accuracy, sentimental, etc)...

Also state what your preference of optics is for that rifle or if you like just iron sights.

To not make it more complicated than necessary, these calibers are to include any WIN, WSM, WSSM, Wby Mag, etc., even though I know they're different. In your description, please specify if you prefer the short mag version.

And post your choice of ammo is for that rifle.

My favorite deer rifle is my Weatherby Vanguard .270 WIN. I love the caliber because it's a flat shootin', hard hittin', machine. It's taken one deer, two coyotes, and a turkey. It's very accurate with 1.5" groups at 100 yds and 2" groups at 200. I also like it because the recoil is milder than the .30 caliber series.

Bullet preference: Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, Nosler Partition, or Triple Shock but I'm about to try the XP3 just for shiggles.

Here's a pic of her on stand:

Caliburs I like to shoot at deer...

heavy brush 30/30 or .300 Win Mag.

Open Food plot .243 and I might pull out the yote getter .223 this year

big open food plot .243 or .270

Big open field with a long shot .300 Win Mag

I do plan to hunt with my .357 Mag at some point.

I reaload mostly with Nosler Balistic tip or Barnes X tip.

But my favorite...I'd have to say my Bowtech Allegiance!

Hey cracker, what about .284/7mm?

The first rifle I bought is a S&W model 1500 in .270 Win. I was dragging out a buck and lost the bolt. Yeah, anymore I make sure I close the bolt when dragging. Never did find it and replaced it since then. At the time it was faster to buy a new rifle so I went out and bought a Ruger stainless stalker in 7mm Rem Mag. I figured I'd step it up a little over the 270. Now that's my rifle of choice. Although I haven't shot a deer with it in about 10 years. We only get one buck tags and that's normally used up in archery season. I've shot plenty other things with it though. I have a Leupold VARI-X 3, 3.5-10 x 50mm on it.

I've been reloading 150gn Nosler ballistic tips for it. I used to use 140's but I have found the copper jacket just inside the skin on the far side a few times so I opted to go a little heavier. To tell you the truth I'm a little disappointed with the weight retention. For bigger than deer I've been shooting Federal Premiums with 160gn Barnes TSX's.

I have a Remington 30-06 and love it. To me it is just the best all around big game caliber out there for areas around here. Loaded with 150 gr. core-lokt hollow points and it gives you the deadliest mushrooms in the woods.

I grew up using a 30-30 so they will always be good in my book. The 30-30 has probably brought down more deer than any other caliber.

I've always been partial to my Blazin270WIN.......She's a Savage 110 model sporting a simmons 4-12x50 and breaths Federal Sierra Gameking 150gr BTSP. I like the 270 for it's flat shooting, speed and knockdown punch.
I did just pick up a Marlin 450 BigBore Guide Gun, I don't know if I'll pack it this year but I couldn't pass the deal up. It should be a good Brush Buster for the thick patches in the Northern Zone I hunt.

I've got an 06 and a .30-30.....................both are great guns. .30-06 is the best all around big game gun.
