Well, Steve loaned me 4 of his GT XT Hunters (skinny shafts) to take home and shoot to see if I'll like them.

I started out shooting my fat shafts, and my bow seemed quieter than before the string change (also changed out the string suppressors)...... which is to be expected.

Then I pick up and shoot one of Steve's XT's....... my bow made a lot more noise upon release, and the bow provided more hand-shock than with my fat shaft arrows.

My arrows weigh around 470 grains, and Steve's at 364 (5575's).......... and I felt that his arrows were flexing too much coming out of my bow! As I was shooting in the yard, my wife noticed the difference in noise as well.

Well, I shot both mine, and Steve's arrows yesterday for about 8 rounds. Then today, I was on about my 4th round of shots........ I had one of the XT's knocked, released as normal, and BAM!! My bow made a LOUD noise, and as the arrow flew to the bag target, I knew something was seriously wrong with it! I immediately told my wife, "SOMETHING BAD IS WRONG WITH THAT ARROW!"

I go to pull the arrow, and can tell it is splintered before even touching it. I grab the arrow and pulled it out....... with no restriction at all. There is only 3/4 of the arrow there!! The other 1/4 of the arrow is still in the bag target. The arrow splintered/busted coming out of my bow, but still flew to the target (missing my mark by about 10" though). There are long splinters of carbon sticking out of the target, from the short piece that is inbedded into the bag.

I think I got VERY LUCKY that it didn't EXPLODE while in my bow, and causing damage to my arm and my bow!!!

Here are a couple pics of the arrow......

Remains still in the target...

Need advice

I have shoot a bow a few years ago and really liked it. What do you think?? I know when I got my new Mathews, I was pulling 70lbs that felt like my OLD bow at only 63lbs! Romer and Gutter both were surprised at how easy 70lbs was to pull back and hold after upgrading to newer technology.

But anyhoo, what I'm getting at is.....................

Should we go with the 40-50lb limbs, expecting her to be able to pull a little more weight.... and run it to the lower end??

OR go with the 30-40lb limbs, and just MAX it out???

I'm thinking the 40-50lb limbs would have a better re-sale value, if it ever came to that one day.

What are your thoughts? Max out the weaker limbs, or turn down the stronger limbs?

C'mon you gurus!

Light affecting sight picture?

Here's my problem. I've been noticing a significant point of impact of my arrows with what seems to be the same sight picture in different lighting conditions. I've been practicing all winter indoors in a warehouse with fair lighting. Now that the weather has warmed where I can drag my targets outdoors, the poi of my arrows moved horizontally 4-5" at 20 yds. Getting in a blind outdoors causes them to move even worse (still horizontally). I pay close attention to stance, anchor point and sight picture. When shooting from blind, I make sure my chair is turned to match how I blade my body standing.
I shoot a Mathews bow with a Trophy Ridge front sigt and a pretty large rear peep. Any ideas about what my problem might be?

Sarge

LADIES BOW...

I'm wanting to get my wife into a parallel limb bow, with the full 80% let-off, and with the new technology of all the "smart cams" of today. She's currently shooting an older PSE that we got for her about 4 yrs ago. She only shoots target and 3-D's........ NO HUNTING.

Anyhoo, I went yesterday and looked at a couple for her (well, really for my curiosity first). She wasn't available to go at the time anyway.

I looked at the Bowtech Equalizer, and the Hoyt Kobalt. Now, as a hunter, I liked the Equalizer the best of the two. Also I thought the Kobalt looked a little too small (my wife is about 5' 7"). Also there was about a $150 difference between the two bows (at the place I went to).

I also showed her the Martin line, and she kind of likes the Leopard too. We've glanced (online) at the Elites, Mathews, Parker, Diamonds, Mission bows by Mathews.

Does anyone have any other bows that they would recommend in the parallel limb category?

I want to make sure I look into all of the choices. Then have her go and shoot as many as possible for her final decision.
First Group of 2008

Took the bow out for the first time in 6 months. TOO LONG.
Local range closed so no winter shooting. New one has opened this year.
Deep Winter meant I could not even shoot my lanes until today.

Took a couple pictures of it with the new riser dampeners and the MeanV CSS on it. Old Town Archery redid the timing and adjust the draw back to 66# draw. I'm going into me third year with OEM strings and they all checked out. I guess keeping them well waxed has helped keep them in good condition.

I'm shooting a tad bit high. Could be the adjust draw weight, the css, or just me. Not sure and not real worried about it right now.

The CSS makes the bow 'feel' better. It sort of 'thuds' on the shot and makes the bow feel a little more 'solid'. Not sure how to explain it. I got tired after about a couple dozen shots. Reminds me that now that it is a little warmer I need to get the kids out and running around, for MY benefit.

New Bow Picture

First Group in 6 months (20yds)

My DXT has landed

Well.. just got home a little while ago from Targeteers in New Jersey. I picked up a brand new 2008 Mathews DXT. She cost a pretty penny all said and done, but it'll be well worth it in a few weeks when spring turkey comes in. I already split some nocks at the shop! And those weren't even my arrows!!

Anyway.. here are a few snap shots of the bow.. These pics are kinda crappy because they were taken in the basement. I'll take better pics tomorrow in the sunlight and put them up on here.

I didn't get it in all black like I had originally planned, but after looking it over and over, I relaized the Lost Camo pattern was actually nicer than the black. So I stayed with the camo and he had one in my size in stock, still new in the box.

Here's the whole setup:

'08 Mathews DXT - 27"/70#
Sure-Loc QC 2 sight ( 5 .019" pins )
Mathews HDII Convertible Rest (I have it as a drop away)
6" Doinker Chubby Hunter w/ A-bomb
Sims Limbsavers & string leeches
G5 1/4" Meta Peep
Mathews T5 arrow quiver

This bow shoots like a dream and I love it. IMO, the grip is way better than the grip my Ross had. Not to mention the detachable quiver is nice.

So yes.. I have joined the darkside and I think I'm going to stay here for a while.
Little Tease?

Wanna see my new toy?

I brought home my Bowtech shooter bow the other day, a Sinister Black 101st Airborne....this thing is bad as bad can be!!

60 pounds, 29 inch draw - a 302 grain Easton Lightspeed with 3 black Mini-Blazers...a consistant 321 fps!

I like it alot so far...a pleasure to shoot...the bow holds rock solid! ( to supply a good forward drop) ..... really not needed IMO but thats what I would do if I wanted it.

Timing is a snap....if you have a press that will handle a 28" bow

I used the Bowmaster press and it worked great.

[/center]

Switched to a drop away

After my bow doing some funky things and shooting all over the place without me changing anything in the setup, I went down to Targeteers last night in jersey and had them install a Trophy Ridge Drop Zone on it. Now she spits arrows out like darts. I only shot 3 at 10 yards, but all 3 were within a quarter, touching eachother. Needless to say, I'm impressed. After looking at the rest I had on there, an NAP Quiktune 1000, it seems that the right fork had gotten itself lower than the left somehow and it was wearing away with vane contact, thus sending my arrows flying all over the place. Now I just have to re-sight the pins and then shoot BH's. Can't wait for the Texas trip.

Recurve/Traditional Hunting

Im looking at getting into Traditional hunting, but have no clue about it. I have been bowhunting for about 10 years and am ready for a new challenge. Im looking at a few recurves but do not want to break the bank on my "learner" bow. However I would like to hunt with it. Does anyone have any advice on #age for hunting, types of bows, or anything relevent to help me in this new adventure. I am certain many of you have seen the video of these giant things flying up out of the water near boats, landing in the boats and occasionally taking a boater out. You have probably also seen adventurous fellows taing bow in hand and whacking said carp with bowfishing arrows in mid air. this is my quest! I will take one in mid air! And RiverRat is gonna help me!

So, while looking for a cheap bow to abuse with such activities, my FIL reminds me he has an old Bear Whitetail in the rafters. "BRILLIANT!" I say. The deal should work but i am going to need to put a roller rest on there and there isn't hole. It's got a basic old "Stick-on" rest there. On the opposite side is an indention...you reckon that is a piolt of drilling a hole? I'm gonna do it, but I was just seeing what you all might do to refurbish this old bow enough to use for this activity. The string is mainly made up of cable with just a short piece of actual bow string attached between the two pulleys. You reckon I need to replace that piece? Don't look too bad, but it is old... The deal only pulls around 40 - 50 lbs.

Any other advice? Any bowfisherman ot there?

This is gonna be a hoot! Hope I don't get hurt!

Kinetic Energy

I just started bow hunting this past year and i'm trying to learn as much as i can about all the terms and stuff. I was quite skeptical on them. At first glance I was thinking no way. I used them with my fieldpoints for a few shots just to see what would happen. I didnt need to move my sights at all!! Just for laughs I put a Bear Super Razor Head on a Goldtip arrow with 4" vanes, then went ahead and put a FOB on a Goldtip with the same broadhead to see how they would fly. The fletched arrow I shot just barely caught the target then I sent the FOB down range.... I was stunned it was 5" from the center. Needless to say they will be on my arrows from now on.

Broadheads for MOOSE

I recently bought a Desert Stryker crossbow, and shot two deer with it this past season, including a 10pt buck.
