At the booth she shot just about every bow on the market set for women, but the problem is she is left eye-dominant, and they did not have any left handed bows. Tonight, we drove 4 hours round trip to go to the closest place that had a left handed bow she could handle.

She has shot the PSE Bowmadness and Chaos, Bowtech Soldier and Diamond Razor's edge all in left handed, but also shot and liked the Bowtech Admiral and the Hoyt Vixcen that she shot in right(haven't found anyone that has them in left). The Diamond is out, but we are trying to decide where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas to help us out? I am looking to buy one in the next few weeks before the 3-d shoots start here in town and I start shooting again as she wants to go with me.

She has a 26" draw and handle 46 or so pounds so that will give you some idea as to specs and price really isn't a problem.

Thanks in advance.

What is YOUR choice??

So what broadhead(s) are you shooting this upcoming season?

I have a few choices in my quiver again this year.
I had great success with the Magnus Stinger last year, so I'll have a couple of those. Also purchased a few Magnus Buzz Cuts to try this year.

I killed a small urban buck with the G-5 Striker that didn't go very far last year.... I bow-hunted a few times when I was younger with a youth model, but here I am 8 years later and not exactly fit for youth shooting. I'm also not looking to make 100 yard shots with the worlds best bells and whistles on my bow. I want reliability and affordability. I figure if I practice enough, then I can make my equipment work for me. I'd rather have consistent shooting than a pretty bow.

All of that being said - it boils down to me being cheap. I was in Academy the other day and I found some of their bows on clearance. Here is what I'm looking at...

Bear Archery "Tracker"
Bow length: 34 1/4"
Draw Weight: 60 to 70lbs
IBO Speed: 300fps
Draw Length: 27 1/2 to 29 1/2"
Brace Height: 7 1/4"
Let off: 75%

Its a quad-limb, solo cam bow, as well. By the way - the reason this caught my eye is that in-store its 169 bucks.

-R

Favorite Bow Company?

Whats y'alls favorite bow company. I can't believe how good it feels in my hand and how smooth the thing is. The shop threw in a Whisker Biscuit for free and it only set me back $425. For the way the thing feels and shoots, I think I got a great deal.

Now I'm trying to find some new sights for the thing. It sucks having a nice new bow with banged up old sights! Any suggestions? I see lots of different things on the shelves, and just wonder why some of them cost around 200 bucks. I'm not rich, so $100 is out of my league. I need to keep heating bills this winter in mind. Any help would be great. It started with 24 turkey coming into the plot to feed. Then some doe followed by those birds again. Also has a little buck chasing some doe off about 100 yards. A few grunts and he came in like he was on a string sniffing all the way. Sure is good to see that he was chasing.

Then just before dark two doe were hanging out feeding. The one spooks and starts staring off into the timber before they both bolt. I heard something coming so I grabbed the bow and got ready. Sure enough a yote comes to the edge of the plot and freezes. I drew and left one fly.....THWACK! The dog started spinning and growling. She moved off and I could hear the growling again. Found her about 15 yards away arrow still in. Wacked my first bow coyote!

2009 Elk First one
I had a great season so far. She is 17 but has been hunting with me since she was 4. She learned how to aim and shoot using a bb gun with a red dot scope. I got her a 243 for deer but her condition causes her to jump because of the noise. Once she gets scared once, then she is trigger shy after that. Last year she got her first deer with the help of a guide at Legends Ranch. The guide basically had to pull the trigger for her. So for this season I was going to get her a crossbow and I saw all those cheap crossbows on ebay, 150 & 180 lb crossbows. Does anyone have any experience with these bows? I can't afford the ones at Basspro but I think the only way she would be able to hunt this year would be with a crossbow because they won't be so loud. What do you think?

Athens Archery is looking for National Field Staff shooters

If you would be interested in becoming part of the Athens team email me at rrudd@townofargos.com

I am sending out applications for staff shooters.

Thank you

Rodney Rudd
Athens Archery

www.athensarchery.com

Arrow choice?

I posted this to see which of you guys have preference in arrows that you hunt with mainly.

Washington State Muley meets the Grim Reaper. R.I.P

I got tired of Hiding in the bushes when a 5x4 Buck and other walked by my ground blind at about 5 yards. Stopped and looked in and went on their Merry way. I was across about 100 yards opposite the Ground Blind in the sage Brush. Yesterday, They were scared of the Blind. . I got fed up and tried to stalk the Muleys in the Cut Alfalfa Field but a Doe saw me and the Entire Herd was on Alert. So I walked like normal through the Field to calm the herd down. i decided to head back to the ambush spot to catch some stragglers passing bye. before I got there I observed about 6 Does and a Buck at the rear making their way down the Hill toward the Alfalfa find. I had no choice but to squat down behind a Wind Row of Alfalfa that was about 8 inches high. ( I Hope my trophy Blend "Sage" Scent does it magic!) I changed position and Knelt and stayed Still. The does neared me. I slowly Raised my Range Finder and slowly Ranged them. The lead doe was at 20 yards and moving in toward me!. She and the others kept trying to Smell me But they couldn't get a Scent. The Wind was blowing right at them. Finally, the Buck came up behind the does and looked my Way. I slowly ranged him at 50 yards exactly. He also tried to wind me, But to no avail. I could see that he had Velvet 3x3 plus 2 Eye Guards over 1 inch. Which makes him a legal 4x4 in Washington State. I Slowly raised my Nocked Bow and set the Vital Bow gear slider sight to the 50 yard Pin. As I raised it toward him. he snorted and turned away slightly quartering. As th does started to leave. The Buck stopped to look at them. I placed the 50 yard Pin directly on the Bucks left front Shoulder Low. RELEASE!............THWACK!. He High Kicks and takes off away from me. he Goes about 45 yards and tumbles to the ground and rolls. BUCK DOWN, BUCK DOWN!. I only had about 30 minutes of legal hunting time left. So hurried and called some friend to help me with the transport. So I wasn't able to get good pics until I got him back to the garage. The Grim Reaper did it job. Starrflight Fobs Guiding the HADES like a Deadly Tomahawk Missile. Mossy oak Camo Worked great out in the Open Alfalfa Field and Trophy Blend Deer scent Did magic on the noses of the Muleys. They couldn't smell me, So I wasn't a threat. Giving me enough time to lay some Brown down!. Pass through at 50 Yards. I will post the bow cam kill shot in a few day.

New Hobby

It's ON! Scent-dog handlers have relied on this theory, but it has had no supporting scientific basis. Current research suggests that human odor is more complex. Human Skin Emanation Research for Mosquito Attractiveness. Research has been conducted to determine the components of human odor that is breathed out or is deposited by the skin, not for purposes of specialized canine use, but to identify a mosquito's attraction to human odor. In a study, test subjects transferred their odor by touch onto 2 to 25 2.9mm glass beads. On this small amount of surface area, 346 discernable peaks were detected by cryofocused gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer analyses. All but 43 component peaks were classified and identified (Bernier et al. 2000). "
If you really want to see how hard it is to truly get rid of this thing we call scent, read this article :
http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/fsc/backis...research03.htm
IMHO I think the moral of the story is you aint going to ever really get rid of all your scent . There is no way on earth that you will "eliminate" your scent, it aint gonna happen. Use common sense, do everything you can to keep your odor down, watch the wind, and do a lot of research before you spend big bucks on scent "elimination" products. Some things may help, but "elimination" is a claim none of them can back up." SMAXWELL
"Agreed, and I also believe that scent reduction is also overrated.
You could take every step and scent related precaution possible and the scent coming off your head and body are still plenty potent; more than enough to alert a game animal; that is if it actually gets a snootful. IMO, there are two very key factors that can shed some light on the misconceptions of detection through scent.
1st misconception: "animal was downwind and didn't smell me".
Most of the time you are right when you say that "the animal did not smell me", but you are wrong when it comes to why. Many guys are mistaken in their belief of animals being downwind of their position and not detecting them because they believe they were not giving off enough odor. Believe me you were giving off more than enough odor molecules to get detected by an animal that has a highly advanced sniffer. Because the animal was in the general direction of "downwind" does not necessarily mean that the scent stream you were giving off at the time was passing exactly into the animals nose. A scent stream will normally take many twists and turns as it snakes it's way meandering in the general direction of downwind. A lot of these animals that you "think" got a whiff of you, in reality did not.
2nd misconception: "He would have got out of there if I was giving off odor and he smelled it".
Lets say this time the meandering scent stream did actually pass into the nostrils of the animal. He will run right?; not necessarily. Mood is also a key factor that regulates behavior. There are times when animals will demonstrate a high level of tolerance to human presence and times when they will not. I know what your going to say next. The level or concentration of odor will be what determines the reaction of the animal that does actually smell your presence; right?; so reducing your overall odor footprint is very important, right?
Well, this may or may not be true. It sounds good that I took an odor neutralizing shower and did the same with my gear, but when you step out and get in the woods new odor molecules are being produced by your body and by the gazillions. These also smell real bad to a deer. The second you stepped out of the shower and started to get dressed your body was already in full blown skin shedding, pores gushing, massive scent production mode. The human body does not have to be working hard or sweating to produce mass quantities of odor; your body does so all by itself. You could be sitting in a chair and your pores are still churning it out big time; and here's the shocker for all you scent gurus out there: it also smells the same to a deer.
So I ask you: The guy who did the whole nine yards of scent "elimination" goes out there and sits in his stand. Do you really believe that the "new" odor coming off his head doesn't stink real bad if a deer actually does get a whiff of it? It does! The animals mood will be a key factor in how he reacts. The concentration of odor coming from this guys head is substantial; shower or not.
The foreign stimuli can be visual, audible, or odiferous, and some times the animals "see" you as an immediate threat, and some times they do not.
Many of you probably have had a similar story as I had. I had a doe come in and bed down by my stand once as I was about to come down. I wanted her out of there before I climbed down so I tried to alert her without spooking her too bad. First I started clanging my release against the metal stand, but she wouldn't budge. She heard me; looking up, but stayed bedded. Next I started waving my arms at her as she looked up. She saw me, but again would not flee. I had to climb down with her there, and it wasn't until I started walking towards her that she finally got up and ran.
The point is she knew I was there and that something was not right, but in this instance, she did not care very much; nor did she feel threatened. Why?; mood. There are also many times when they catch your scent but don't really react to it as a grave threat. Other times they are on alert and very wary of danger. When this is the case the slightest stimuli can set them off.
The point is: IMO the whole scent thing is a lot of hog wash. You give off a ton of odor no matter what you think you are doing to "eliminate" or reduce it. The new odor coming off your head can be perceived by an animal that actually gets a whiff of it, and who is in a mood of low tolerance, as a nuclear bomb" SKYHUNTER

Cabela's Archery Classic (Hamburg,PA)

Myself, and some other Mossy Oak Pro Staffers will be there on August 1st and 2nd if anyone will be stopping by, would love to meet some fellow AT'ers!

Looks to be a great show with many good seminars!

Arrow Fletching 101
Have you ever wanted to fletch your own arrows but didn't think you could. I've had a Toxonics on my Switchy for the last 4yrs, and the fibers have begun to fade. Not really wanting to re-fiber them.... but just ready for a change all together.

I bought my wife the Apex Inferno last year (same time I bought her Bowtech from Eric at Petitts), and that sight has really impressed me. I'd go out on a limb and say they have THE brightest pins on the market today! Because this past week I have been running all around to archery shops looking at ALL the sights, for my bow. Anyhoo, I ordered the Apex Axim (newest model) with tool-less windage etc. The Axim comes in a 4 pin, and 6 pin.... both are .019 pins. And I swear that their .019's are so bright that they "look" as big as most other brand's .029 pins!! So I've got the 4 pinner on the way. No shop had it in stock!

I also made a change in the release dept, and ordered the new Scott Sabertooth. Hope it suits me well, and that I'll like it. I've shot the Wildcat and liked it okay, but I like the dual caliper a little better.

Also bought some more arrow shafts last week, and I fletched them up a couple days ago. So now I'll be ready to hit the R-100 with some new gear, and maybe even a new level of confidence this year. Although I did still get my R-1000 award last year, and hoping for it again this year!

If anyone is interested, I'll follow up with a report on my thoughts of the new sight and release when I get some "miles" in on them.

Slick Tricked Groundhog

It's that time of the year again and I'm back on varmint duty around my house. This was the first groundhog to meet my DXT this year. I missed the first shot (first miss with my bow on an animal), and he only jumped and went a few yards from the arrow. I forgot that Rage BH's shoot high out of my bow, the arrow went right over his back. So I nocked another arrow, but with a Slick Trick this time and let it fly. Needless to say, he was smoked, and only made it 10 yards. This makes Groundhog #6 for me with this bow.

Cart of Death!!!

Where have we seen this before? On the second trip the wind was a factor,it never got that hot and the shooting was slow, then broke open for an hour in which time we nailed 45 Carp in an hour. This is just in the past two weeks on Clear Lake,We where to enter the bow fishing Tournament on May 30 th,and June 1 st,but my friend has a client Bass fishing on the lake that Wed. which is in Violation of the rules as they could say he was scouting out for the Tournament as the lake is closed to all participants for some six day, this is really sad as big fish each day is worth $1000.00 Buck, best average for the tournament gets two new bows and it pays for 30 entries deep. but at least we get to go out the day before they start and tare them up. The snow, wet weather, and flodding made it hard to hunt early in the season and the toms where henned up most of the season and it was a struggle trying to get them to come to calls or decoys.

Here are my 3 toms for the spring season:

First picture: This bird came in to check out my decoys in full strut as he worked his way toward a known roosting area. The 16 yard shot put him down for the count.

Second picture: After being defeated in the blind I took the hunt to the birds. A successful spot and stalk with a 31 yard shot had me admiring this mature gobbler.

Thrid picture: This tom came running in from 200 yards on a dead sprint to my calling. He flew across the creek and strutted right up to my decoys. A shot from a mere 4 yards severed the birds heart and he ran a short distance.

Introduction

I thought I would introduce myself, since I made my first post a few days ago. My name is Adam Raymond and I live in the Willamette Valley here in Oregon. My hobbies are hunting, scouting, hiking, camping, and reading anything about wildlife or hunting. I archery hunt Black-tail Deer and Roosevelt Elk here in the Oregon coast range and west hills of the Willamette Valley. I will pick up a rifle every once in awhile if I draw an additional deer tag. I lave to tree tree stand hunt blacktails during the first week or two of the early archery season and then either tree stand or set up on the ground to call and rattle blacktails in the late season. I cover tons of ground whenever I'm hunting Roosevelt Elk. I've spent a couple of seasons hunting turkey with my bow and got lucky one year getting a 7 1/2 inch beard Tom. I have also tried for a few years to get a bear with my bow, but with no luck. I just could not close that last few yards, get that perfect shot angle, or get busted by the wind.

I'm going to Oregon State University in the Fish & Wildlife Department. I have done several years of volunteer work with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). Spending 3 months working full time on EE Wilson Wildlife Refuge and 3 1/2 months doing wolf survies in NE Oregon last summer was a blast. I'm waiting to here back if I will get another job this summer following cougars and recovering any predation. ODFW may lose the funding for the position so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I may even be helping a land owner incorporate a wildlife management program on his 1,000 acres of property this summer.

I'm on about a million different hunting websites going as "Blacktail Slayer" or "BlacktailSlayer". I post a lot of threads about any news or science about wildlife or hunting topics. Let me know if you have any questions.
http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/blacktailhunter/?albumview=slideshow
Scent Lok Lawsuit

Did anyone hear that Lee Lakowsky has been subpoena in the Scent Lok lawsuit? That should be very interesting with his background as a chemist and having a very successful hunting background/career. I can’t wait to hear or read about his testimony.

Here is the paperwork for one of the lawsuits.
http://www.skinnymoose.com/ALSLawsuit.pdf

It looks like some lawyers are looking to help other people out who feel they got ripped off by Scent Lok.
http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/scent-lok.html

Looks like more cases:

Washington
http://dockets.justia.com/docket/court-waedce/case_no-2:2009cv00107/case_id-47192/

Indiana
http://dockets.justia.com/docket/court-insdce/case_no-1:2009cv00388/case_id-22807/

I found this posted by “Scentguy” on another website.

“This is from the original filing in the Minn.case. There are over 200 documents filed in that case. Depositions etc. All the documents are not available because some are sealed. (All available on justia.com)
Arguements for certification were held May 5,2009. Decision to be announced shortly

There have beeb additional suits filed in Ill., Wisconsin , Flordia , Maryland ,
Indiana , and Washington . In each of these their are speficific charges against the defendants.

Cabela's , Gander Mountain , Bass Pro , Browning , and Robinson Outdoors
along with Scentlok are named defendants so this is a much larger suit then has been discussed and will be very far reaching in its effect on the hunting community.
The scope of the suits has widen to include TV advertising and shows , magazine advertising and promotion , and prostallers statements.

The hunting industry is strangely silent in providing information and most publication are afraid to provide up to date information. Scentguy”

I found this great post by “Doc” on a website.

“Hunters, fishermen, and all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts have become such a taken-for-granted target of false advertisement schemes that now we are starting to accept the fact that products do not have to perform as warranted. Do we enjoy being lied to so much that we are now cheering on the manufacturers who prey on us with their lies and deceit.

I personally am grateful that someone has taken on the effort of trying to make these characters liable for intentional deceptions and if they prove their case, I will cheer the outcome. I have nothing but contempt for businesses that take my hard earned cash under false and fraudulent claims and deceptive advertising techniques. If they are guilty, they deserve whatever financial punishment that they get.

Of course I reserve all of my appreciation for this action until such time as their case is proven. I have never bought any of this stuff because of the exhorbitant cost, so I have no opinion on whether the stuff actually works or not. That issue will be for the plaintiffs to prove.

Doc”
How old is too old

How long would a bow last if kept in good shape? i bought my first real bow back in november and just wondering how long it should last.

Staff shooting positions available.

Dead Center Archery has shooting postions available if anyone is interested. At last they arrived yesterday! I picked it up today. Oh, man, I am in heaven! WHOO! I shot Hoyt AlphaMax 35. Had it set up, shot with 370 grains arrow/broadhead combined, and chrono was at 281 FPS maxed out at 60 lbs. I was satisfied. Then I shot Hoyt Katera XL. Set it up, shot with 400 grains arrow/broadhead combined, and chrono was at 276 FPS set at 65 lbs. I was pleased. Both of the bows sounded good, real quiet! I'll be posting up my bows soon once I get the pictures taken.
