I shoot both the .17 and a .223 for varmint . The .17 does good for me on coyotes and bobcats , but I dont usually push it over 100-150 yards . If I know Im gonna have to shoot further , I take my .223 .

Hello. I'm looking to buy a deer rifle for my grandson.He is small fram about 60lb. Looking at Rossie's combo in 243 &20 ga.He's 8yrs old. has'nt pass his hunter safty yet. But i have faith in him.Any sugestion.

This would be a pretty heavy gun for a youngster. I would prefer the H&R Handi Rifle Youth 243 Win. (SB2-Y43) and send the reciever back in and have a shotgun barrel fitted to it. Should be a better fit and easier for him to shoot.

I would seriously consider the .22-250, the trajectory on that is flatter out to 300 yards than the .223 It also carries more energy at long distances. I even looked into the .220 Swift for ya, and the .22-250 is gonna be the best "bang for the buck" literally and you can find ammo quite easily for that caliber. This info is based on a 55 grain bullet for both the .223 and .22-250 and a 50 grain bullet with the .220 swift. Hope this helps a little.

These are all good range calibers and you will get the 300yd. distance that you are looking for.
They are also recoil freindly and good on those coyotes, if you take up predators.
My decision would fall on the different types of loads that you can get with each caliber, but if
you hand load your own then it might not matter.

Shoot Straight and keep it in the 10 ring.

i've been told that the .204 gives me the velocity like a 22-250 and better with the right ammo, but with less energy. can you guys give me ideas on .223, .204, 22-250

well right now im looking to shoot at range here locally (fresno, ca) ok ill forget about the .17hmr thanks everbody. ill look into the .223 someone was telling me to look into the .204 what do you guys think about that one?? and my budget as gone up also to $650 put i dont want to push it past that mark

A big +1 on the .223! You might have to spend over your budget but it is well worth it. If you need some help picking one out just let me know. I would also be very hesitant about taking a .17 out to 300 yards.

.223 is your best bet...I know people that can hit a pretty small spot at 300 with that gun. Ruger is what he's shooting.

I believe you would be better served with the .223 Remington centerfire in one of the Savage models if you are looking for accuracy to 300yds. The 17HMR is accurate, but easily affected by the wind and I would not be comfortable with it beyond 150yds. You would also be limited to small varmints and a poor choice for coyotes with 17HMRimfire.

im considering purchasing a new rifle any suggestions?? i want something with a small caliber. i saw the savage .17 hmr , the sales rep told me he has heard good things about the savage and accuracy of the .17 (im looking for accuracy between 150-300yards at range) i want something cheap no more than 400 dollars. the lowest i saw the savage was big 5 for $250. I haven't decided on the .17 im willing to change caliber to something larger and more accurate that you guys/gals might suggest.
