Hunted quite a while with .22-250 and liked it. Had it rebarreled to .22-250 Ackley Improved with a fast twist barrel to shoot 75-80 grain bullets as fast as the original caliber shot 55's. Great for LOOOOONG shots. Gun was kinda heavy to pack afield so now shooting a .243 700 BDL sporter loaded with 55 gr Ballistic tips at around 3900 fps. or so. If you handload and like something interesting, you might also try the 6mm-284.

I haven't hunted yotes YET-----but will! I plan on using my Rock River Arms M4 Entry Tactical .223 as my YOTE weapon of choice!

i haven't got to try it on any dogs yet, but i just got a heavy barrel handi rifle in 204 ruger. Hoping to try it out this weekend.

Ummm...I was talking about the Reminton 223. Get it in a 223 so you can use the same ammo with the AR 15 as well. But you are right though, if you do plan to build an AR15 get it chambered in 5.56. It will plink 223's as well.

I got that Rem 700 at Academy Sports for $399 and some sale price, maybe $349. 223 is a flat long distance shooting rifle. I chose it over the 22-250 for one reason only, they didn't have it in stock at the time! The 223 comes in a little bit of a heavier bullet so I'm satisfied. You can't go wrong with either gun. But if you do plan on buying or building an AR15, go with the 223 so you won't have to worry about getting so many different types of ammo.

Jason, I most certainly did not miss that thread. However, I knew not what I was looking at, as I am not a hand who is one with the long gun...unless it's a shotty.

I am leaning towards a .223 or 22-250. Any advantage of one over the other?

Is that Rem 700 reasonably priced?

I know I need to man-up and just buy an AR 15...but you know...kids and a wife give me them puppy dog eyes like they ain't gonna get to eat for a week when I dump that kind of cabbage...

I wish I had one of them Barrett .50 cal sniper rifles...or maybe that shotgun Al mentioned...

Instead, I use one of:

.270 Weatherby / Bushnell something or rather 4-12 x 40mm / Federal Nosler Ballistic Tip or Partitions in 130 grain.

.308 Ruger m77 Hawkeye / Bushnell Elite 3-9x40mm / Federal Nosler Ballistic Tip in 150 grain or Federal Sierra Game King BTSP in 165 grain.

or

Stag Arms AR-15.

Although I have managed to kill a yote and a young fox with my Glock 27 in .40cal.
