Looking for a gunsmith to repair a bolt

Remington 721 30/06 rifle.

In need of a new extractor clip install. I have been told that they make a jig that is used to drill a hole in the bolt and a kit that is made to install a newer Model 700 extractor clip and rivet.

If anyone knows of someone who has this kit and is willing to install that clip, please leave a message.

Deer Rifle Caliber

I'm just curious what everyone hunts with that is allowed to hunt with a rifle for deer.

Pick your favorite caliber for deer on the poll and then tell us why you like it, who makes it, post a pic if you want, etc. (Examples of why it suits you: Terrain, distance, brush, recoil, accuracy, sentimental, etc)...

Also state what your preference of optics is for that rifle or if you like just iron sights.

To not make it more complicated than necessary, these calibers are to include any WIN, WSM, WSSM, Wby Mag, etc., even though I know they're different. In your description, please specify if you prefer the short mag version.

And post your choice of ammo is for that rifle.

coyote rifle

I am fairly new to coyote hunting and would like to someday own a centerfire. I usually borrow a friend's .223 or .270 when we hunt together. I can't afford to sink much money into a gun (or shells) so what would you all suggest for a budget-friendly model and caliber? I'll plan on spending some on a decent scope to top it off.

Hearing loss

Well it finally happened.

About a month ago, I was making some ground up deer meat and the month before that I was building a garage and operating power tools with no hearing protection and the first and second week of December - I hunted deer with my high power rifles and today I was spot checked for my hearing for a job interview and they did something called a whisper test, where a woman whispered something - while she stood behind you and I could not hear what she said because the ringing in my ears was louder then her voice and there was electric motors in the room that was making humming noises and I just couldn't hear.

Tomorrow - I will have to go and look for someone to test my hearing and they will decide if I can get a CDL drivers license or not.

I believe some of the stress she put on us by making us take two urine sample tests in a row really stressed me out. I was prepared to go to the bathroom once, but not twice in the same hour.
There are some really stupid women in this world and she was a blond and took the cake.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Deer Stands

I saw a real nice deer stand the other day when I posted - asking for advice as to a good gun to use for deer hunting.

Does anyone have any good pictures of their deer stands that they would like to share with us.

Mine is just a simple 4' x 4' pallet with 3 walls and a fireplace, a roof over my head and a piece of plywood for a door, about 10 feet off the ground.

I never had a digital camera to take a picture of it, but the next time I am in the woods, I will try to get someone to take a picture of it - if you want.

Varmint Rifle

I am tired of putting 7mm amo downrange into varmints!
Looking into a .223 rifle AR style, need some input and see if anyone has used the rifle I am looking to buy. I am looking into the Rock River Arms rifles. A couple people I have talked to (one shoots 3 gun competition) have said that these are the best bang for your buck rifles out there. You can get a custom rifle put to gether to your specs for $1,100.00 - the optics that is up to you. You can choose different foregrip, barrels, optic rails, barrel twists etc. and still come in $300 under a stock S&W M&P.
Any input?

find history with a serial #

I would appreciate any help with trying to find a web site, a phone # or an address that I could go to, to try and find out the history of an older rifle that I had just inherited.
It is a winchester model 70 and was purchased in 1963 or 64. I don't know which one.

First Deer Rifle

I have never owned a rifle before. It has always been a shotgun or muzzleloader but, after the first of the year when income tax rolls around I was planning on buying one.

I am thinking of 30/30 because I don't shoot long distances. Where I generally hunt it is all hardwoods and swamp so I generally try to keep it short.
I was thinking originally 270 or 308 but I'm told that is overkill for the short distances I shoot and I was also thinking of a 243 because of less recoil but isn't that for long range as well.

Any help would be appreciated! I am usually a short range shooter if that helps.

Need help choosing a deer rifle

I got a Mule Deer tag this season and since it is my first time I need to get a gun. I have been looking at different calibers and I kind of like the 25-06, any suggestions would be helpful. I want a caliber that would work good on both Mule Deer and coyotes. As for a gun I have been looking at the T/C Encore and The Ruger M77 Hawkeye. I have been looking at some of the Remington Models any suggestions on that would also be helpful. The most I would want to spend is $700.

help choosing new rifle

im considering purchasing a new rifle any suggestions?? i want something with a small caliber. i saw the savage .17 hmr , the sales rep told me he has heard good things about the savage and accuracy of the .17 (im looking for accuracy between 150-300yards at range) i want something cheap no more than 400 dollars. the lowest i saw the savage was big 5 for $250. I haven't decided on the .17 im willing to change caliber to something larger and more accurate that you guys/gals might suggest.

Powder Load Question

I have the 1st generation Rem 700ML and I got the conversion kit so I could use #209 primers.

Now I see the Nikon BDC scope that would be great due to the reticle markings for 100-250 yard shots using a 250 gr. bullet with 150 grains of powder behind it.

HOWEVER, in looking at the Remington ML manual it shows to load to only 120 Grain Pyrodex Pellets. I see I can now buy Pyrodex in 60 grain loads which helps.

So, will using the 120 grain load really impact using the Nikon BDC as they were very specific about sighting in at 100 yards using 150gr power/250 gr bullet combo ???

Winchester SXR 30-06

I got a Winchester 30-06 last season. I sighted in and have been shooting super-x 180 grain rounds and I really like it. I've noticed a lot of people use 150 grain. What are the pros and cons?

Problems

A buddy of mine has a browning 270 , not sure the model... we attempted to sight it in today for about the 5th time this month and for some reason it's not holding a pattern at all. the scope rings are tight, shooting it off a shooting table (steady as it gets), and he first was useing federal 150grains... it holds a softball pattern at about 50 yards, all over the place but within a softball.. at 100 yards, its terrible. we shot numerous rounds out of it this morning and at 100, it's 8" high, then a foot low, then the same right to left.. all aiming dead nuts but thats the results.. we also tried the remington core loc 130's that i shoot, its a little better but pretty much the same.. he bought this rifle off one of his relatives used, but nice shape.. the barrel is clean and we gave plenty of time to cool down.. thinking warped barrel or something in that nature but we're both stumped. he went out and bought a lot of different brands of ammo in the past but nothing seems to work out.. dont know how else to try to help him out, any suggestions would be appreciated

700 CDL .300 RUM

I have an opportunity to pick up Rem 700 CDL in .300 RUM. The gun is like new. Not a scratch on it for $525. I love .30 cals but don't really need a .300 RUM. The Remington power level ammo does get my interest however I have always been a Hornady loyal shooter.. Figure I can shoot power level 1 and basically have a 30.06 with the ability of going heavier if I want. If any .300 RUM shooters can give me some feedback to help me decide, I would be grateful. By the way, I love Rem 700's. I have a 30.06 M700 that my son wants me to give him. Sounds like a win / win situation.

Stainless or Moly

I'm looking to buy a new deer rifle. I have never owned a stainless barrel rifle, opting always for the blued chrome moly version. What experiences have you had with accuracy of stainless barrel rifles? Since I normally go with Remington, I was thinking of the 700 XCR in 300 WSM. I already have a .308 and 30.06. Don't really need a WSM. Just want one. Love those .30 cals.

I've had my old Marlin .35 lever action gun for some time now. I dropped the gun last year and knocked the scope outta line. I decided to change scopes and sight in the gun with the new Hornady LEVERevolution shells. The gun is miss firing the shells like crazy. Could it be the primer is too thick on these new design bullets? Most .35 shells are rounded, or blunt nose. These are more like a long range round? Anybody have any thoughts?
