I agree with what was said before, barrel length doesnt really factor in as much as trying different loads/chokes and getting to know how your gun shoots. To each his own with this one.
Longbeard.

RE: Barrel length

I shoot the Remington 870 with the 23 1/2''

RE: Barrel length

Magnus (1/11/2010)
My favorite turkey gun has a 18" barrel. I agree that the choke has a lot more to do with your patterning than the length of the barrel. I also find the shorter barrel lengths easier to handle when on the move. Like a lot of other things it comes down to personal choice.

I'd say ditto, except I use a 21" barrel. I like it for manuverability. It's nice when trying to move through the woods with it slung over your shoulder, and lighter for holding when sitting, waiting for that tough birds to take those last few steps.

RE: Barrel length

My favorite turkey gun has a 18" barrel. Elite #6. It swings fast in the brush and has killed em dead at 60 yds, although I must say I would not have taken the shots If I had known the exact yardage.
It works well with my type of turkey huntin.

GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS, AND STAY SAFE !
L.K.LESLIE
HOOSIER HUNTER CUSTOM CALLS
MOSSY OAK PROSTAFF

RE: Barrel length

If I may add my own two cents here.

Barrel length has almost nothing to do with velocity or accuracy when it comes to a Turkey Gun.

We all know from experience that a good turkey gun is one where the hunter can swing, aim and shoot from a sitting position, since most spring gobbler hunting is probably done while sitting on the ground.

The choke inside of the barrel has more to do with game getting power then anything else.

I have a Browning Gold Hunter 3 1/2 inch that has shot two turkeys with one shot with a 2 3/4 inch low brass Remington Game Load. It didn't just do it once, it did it several times.

The choke was a plain old modified.

At the same time, I have missed many turkeys with a modified choke and a 3 1/2 inch nitro mag shell.

My opinion of that particular gun after doing extensive testing was that it's best patterns came from a 3 inch Nitro mag - #5 or #6 shot.

The patterns make more of a difference then does the manufacturer of the gun, shell or choke tube or the length of the barrel.

The only way to find out how your gun pattern's is to shoot a whole bunch of shells at a target at 25, 30, 35 and 40 and 50 yards. The 3 1/2 inch Nitro Mag turkey loads will reach out that far with the right choke tubes.

RE: Barrel length

I shoot a Browning BPS with a 24 inch barrel and a turkey extra full choke.

Previously used a Remington 870 with a 18 inch barrel and turkey extra full choke

RE: Barrel length

I shoot a 28" on a mossberg 935

RE: Barrel length

i'd say so if you've got a good pattern

RE: Barrel length

Thanks guys, so my Mossberg 535 ATS - 28'' will do...

RE: Barrel length

24'' on a mossberg 835 for me.

RE: Barrel length

i shoot 28" on a 3 1/2 mossberg 935

Barrel length

What's the prefered barrel length for hunting wild turkey ?
