That's has the same safety considerations as using a full body deer decoy during gun season. They may be effective, but not necessarily the best of ideas.

Blind manufacturers take note! Have some orange flip out panels on your blinds, preferably near the top that can be rolled up or removed when not needed.

RE: Pop -Up Ground Blinds On Public Lands

Good suggestion. In the interim cheap deal it to get one or a few of those turkey orange strips and you place them around the trees neat your blind.

RE: Pop -Up Ground Blinds On Public Lands

Good point and the same goes for turkey season...

my blind has some blaze patches that can go on it but I don't use them as I don't hunt public ground...

RE: Pop -Up Ground Blinds On Public Lands

Not a bad idea. I have the blessing of not having to hunt
public land, but N.C. law requires blaze orange to be worn in the
field by everyone regardless. If I were to hunt on a public game land,
I would surely put some kind of blaze on my pop-up after reading this.
Thanks Gary.

RE: Pop -Up Ground Blinds On Public Lands

Extremely good point!! Public land seems to really have some loose cannons lurking! If the rule for blaze orange clothing is in effect, it should be the same for any type of blind or concealment.. Even if there is no mandatory orange requirement, I thinks it's still important to have something blaze on for your own saftey!

Pop -Up Ground Blinds On Public Lands

Here in Ohio during any of the gun seasons, you need to wear a coat or a vest of hunter orange. There are a lot of people who use the pop-up ground blinds on public lands. They get the orange coat on and climb inside the blind, close the windows and look from behind the camouflaged mesh netting. It is not mandatory to put any orange on the out side of the blind. They recommend it, but don’t enforce it. These blinds are meant to conceal the hunter from the deer, not other hunters. I think this is very dangerous and could be a deadly mistake. I would hate to see or read of such a preventable tragedy. I use a pop-up myself. I don’t use one on public lands during gun season. I want every hunter in the woods to know where I'm at.
The past 2 season seamed to be the season’s of ground blinds. Specifically the camouflaged pop-ups. They were every where on the public lands in north west Ohio. Some could be seen easily, others were very well concealed. I myself had gotten within 30 yards of one before I seen it.
There are a lot of gun hunters in Ohio. Most of these guys only hunt deer during that time. I have seen people start shooting at the first glimpse of a deer. Not paying attention to the down range side.
I want as many people as possible to read this. I have thought of sending this out to the manufacture’s of pop-ups. If they would make a orange cover, such as a rain fly on a tent. It would be in the carrying bag for use when needed.
This has also gone out to the Ohio DNR. To at least get them to consider putting it in the rules and make it mandatory for gun season on public lands.
