We thought it was pretty cool idea for a license plate. I know it looks close to the ground but its actually 18 inches off of it. Truck is going up 6" this weekend so it wont ever come close to touching even in offroad situations. Feel free to provide feedback. Hopefully we (Team Whack 'Em & Stack 'Em) will have our website up and running soon and we can show some more of the accessories and apparel we make. I fugured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

i filled the cattle feeder the hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up--3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me.

i wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end ao I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it...it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope and then received an education.

The first thing that i learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That Deer EXPLODED.

The second thing i learned is that pound for pound, a deer is ALOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and some dignity. A deer--no chance.

That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined.

The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later,it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes relize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and the deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.

Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of resonsibilt for the situation we were in, so I didnt want the deer to have it suffer a slow death, so I manged to get it lined back up in between my truvk and the feeder--a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist.

Now, when a deer bites your, it is not like being bit by a horse where they bite you and then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bit HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for sveral minutes, but it was likely only sveral seconds.

I, being smarter than the deer 9though you may be questioning that claim by now) tricked it. While i kept it busy tearing the bejesus out of my arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.

Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hovves are surprisingly sharp.

I learned a long time ago that, when an animal--like a horse strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best ting to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy.

I screamed like a women and tried to trun and run.

The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that ir will hit you in the back of the head.

Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.

So no I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope so that they can be somewhat equal to the prey.

Is anyone finding antlers?

Bueller....Bueller.....

The site seems slow on shed antlers. He is getting it set up to take 3-4 handicapped kids hunting for HOPE this year.

I can think of no greater personal or spiritual reward than helping some of these kids and adults on an adventure hunting, fishing, or shooting skeet, that otherwise would never have the opportunity, or may not live for many more years.

This organization will be launched nationally in 2009 with hopes of having one or more chapters in every state.

I have pledged myself to this endeavor and would like for anyone who can participate in anyway to help make these outing happen, to contact me. It may be nothing more than volunteering to spend a weekend on the hunt helping these persons get to and from a stand, cook, play music, help to find hosts to offer hunts, or donating lodging and hunts at your club.

If we can get members in our region to help film some of these hunts, it would be a blessing.

Those who are far away, can try to find someone willing to sponsor or host a hunt for a few kids and set it up, and hopefully get support in their area and start a chapter there later down the road.

Jimmy (DOODAA)and I have made a mutual decision to use some hunts already filmed, in the MOTV.com tv shows he is putting together for Team Hammerdog, and provide advertising in each show for this organization.

It is a Christian based foundation and offers non-denominational ministry of GOD and what he is capable of doing, by HIM helping to make these hunts possible and the christian love of all the volunteers who donate their time and effort.

Our sponsor list is growing daily.

The website is being built but here is a link and read the story..........

http://www.hopeoutdoors.org
Salute to the 07/08 Mossy Oak season

I made a little video of some of our kills from this season. There are a lot of people who use the pop-up ground blinds on public lands. They get the orange coat on and climb inside the blind, close the windows and look from behind the camouflaged mesh netting. It is not mandatory to put any orange on the out side of the blind. They recommend it, but don’t enforce it. These blinds are meant to conceal the hunter from the deer, not other hunters. I think this is very dangerous and could be a deadly mistake. I would hate to see or read of such a preventable tragedy. I use a pop-up myself. I don’t use one on public lands during gun season. I want every hunter in the woods to know where I'm at.
The past 2 season seamed to be the season’s of ground blinds. Specifically the camouflaged pop-ups. They were every where on the public lands in north west Ohio. Some could be seen easily, others were very well concealed. I myself had gotten within 30 yards of one before I seen it.
There are a lot of gun hunters in Ohio. Most of these guys only hunt deer during that time. I have seen people start shooting at the first glimpse of a deer. Not paying attention to the down range side.
I want as many people as possible to read this. I have thought of sending this out to the manufacture’s of pop-ups. If they would make a orange cover, such as a rain fly on a tent. It would be in the carrying bag for use when needed.
This has also gone out to the Ohio DNR. To at least get them to consider putting it in the rules and make it mandatory for gun season on public lands.

Shipping crates stand continued......

It was kind of a rainy day project this weekend.I got to work on this.

Well this is what I have been working on.Everything I was planning on doing was not panning out.So I switched to back-up plan 2-b.Ffrriday Night I made a trip to Lowe's and bought some lumber and Hardware.Started by cutting the door and laying out the windows.

Got up Sat. and resumed the last cuts on the window for them to open.Friday night I had made the framwork and cut the top and bottom, screwed in the hinges and all was left was to make the side cuts.

Put in a shelf for the all important Dt. And posted it on my page at My Hunting Room. It has been featured as the story of the month. Might not be a well known site , but it's a start. If you have time to read it , here is the link.

Try to copy and then paste it to your browser

http://myhuntingroom.com/index.php?login_error=1&return=sn_manage_profile&returnid=

Dues paid!

I have been hunting whitetail deer for nearly twenty years. I have had good success at harvesting meat. I have taken a couple of small bucks. My first deer , a 7 point I took on private land and a 4 point I took on a draw hunt. I’ve blown it on a lot of big, book class deer. Either the shot or the setup.
The 2003 deer season started off very well. I harvested a yearling doe during bow season, in the urban zone. Opening day of gun season, I harvested a mature doe on public land, using my either sex tag. I headed back to the urban zone with one doe tag left. I was shocked when I seen an old 12 point walk out on the logging trail, 50 yards to my left. I drew a bead on his shoulder and said to myself out loud“. If I only had a tag”. I watched as the 180 class buck walked off threw the pines.
The next year during the 2004 bow season. I hunted a small cut bean field near my home. There was a giant buck in the area. Many people had seen him, including myself. I set up at the edge of the field under a tree. I was getting very cold and was ready to call it a day. I leaned forward to look down the tree line. That’s when I seen the big boy heading into the field about 150 yards away from me. The cold I was feeling was gone. Replaced by warm pumping blood in my veins. The buck was at least 5 ½ years old . A lot of mass on his 12 point rack . The 160+ class buck got out about 50 yards and turned in my direction. He fed toward me and turned again now closing the distance. I came to full draw at 22 yards. I started to raise the bow to get my pin sight on him. That’s when I started hitting branches above me. I cut a nice area out , but never drew my bow to test the height. Needless to say the giant was gone in a flash.
My next encounter with a big buck was on opening day of bow season 2005. I had over slept and did not meet up with my two hunting buddies. I found their truck in one of the parking lots of the nearly 2500 acre public lands. I chose to go to a different area instead of trying to find them. I slipped onto a ridge and down the draw. Set up in my climber and waited for day break. Shortly after shooting light. I spotted movement in the thickets at the top of the ridge. This buck that walked out at 30 yards was magnificent. A large bodied 10 point with ivory white antlers. 4 ½ to 5 ½ year old, at least a 15o-160 class deer. I slowly drew my bow. Put my 30 yard pin just behind his right shoulder. I let it fly. The arrow hit a small limb out in front of me that I had not seen. I heard (thwack) as my arrow buried in a sapling. The buck turned and ran back to the thickets.
The 2006-2007 season , I started off seeing deer the first day. Same ridge as last year. My best friend and I, were 50 yards apart. We had a lot of hunters around us after day light.( That is the only down fall to hunting public lands). I was ready to get down and move at 11:00 am. As I was putting my range finder and other gear away. I spotted an 8 point staring at me. I froze, not wanting to spook him. He was on the move, circling to get my scent. I got my friends attention and using pre arranged hand signals, let him know of the buck coming his way. He did get a shot, but bounced his arrow off a small tree. The rest of bow season went as well did gun season.
During the fall of ‘05 I had bought a house in the country. There is a small 3 acre wood lot , in the middle of the fields, behind my home. I was able to get writen permission to put up my ladder stand, and hunt there. We see a lot of deer out there on a 10-12 day pattern. The trick is getting to the stand. I told my wife, I have to get in there before the deer do. I have been busted on more than one occasion approaching the woods.
I had enough with gas prices. This season had been expensive. The public land were almost 100 miles one way. When I told my buddies I was going to hunt the woods out back during black powder, they got upset that I was breaking tradition. They knew it is not big enough for all of us.
I started out to the woods the afternoon of December 29th. I stopped at my neighbors wood pile to glass the edge of the woods. I seen a doe being chassed by a wide racked 10 point. I went back to the house, and asked my wife to drive me around the block. I slipped up to the north east corner of the woods and stayed there. My family told me latter , the deer stayed on the south edge of the woods untill dark. I did break down the next day and rode with my friends back to the public area. On the drive back that night , I let them know I was staying home on the last day .
The last day of Muzzle loader was December 31 2006. I was in the wood lot well before day break. The morning was crisp, a soft breeze from the south west. My stand is on the east end of the woods, 10 yards in off the field. I got real cold and discouraged and headed to the house at 9:45am. I woke my wife for work, and warmed up a little. She had asked if I would take her to work.” I ‘m going back out there “ I told her. I was back on stand at 10:30am. I watched a couple of hunters walk out to the woods east of my location. Shortly after that I heard the familiar sound of a deer running threw the leaves. It was the wide racked 10 point. Coming down the tree line toward me. He must have gotten my wind , because he turned to his right and jumped the over grown fence line at thirty yards, quartering toward me on the run. I grunted a couple of times trying to stop him. Nothing doing, he has done this before. Now at 25 yards still running , quartering away I had one shot and one chance. I took carful aim with the T/C cap lock. Keeping up with the bucks speed, I squeezed off the shot. As smoke was blowing in the wind and the report of the shot rang in the woods, I seen the buck spin like in a uturn. He is now walking off slow. Franticly I reload, watching as the buck stops at 90 yards. I aimed and shot. The big racked buck turned and walked off to the west, going deeper inside the woods. The second shot must have missed him. I watched him with my glasses and lost sight of him. I sat down and tried to gather my nerves from what just took place. I waited for a life time it seamed. I called my buddy on my cell and told him of the mornings events. “Did you get him” he asked. I don’t know yet , I replyed. After the call I got down and started looking for sign. At the location of the first shot, I found lots of hair. I followed turned up leaves, finding some hair along the way to the second shot area, still nothing, not even a drop of blood! Now I’m getting worried. I looked for 45 min. between the two locations and found nothing. I was beside myself. I decided I would go to the house and wait for my buddy to get there. I walked in the direction the buck went. That’s when I seen legs, from behind a big oak. I walked around the tree to see his big rack sticking up. I can not describe the feeling that came over my at that moment. I hit the big boy a little far back , but still got a hard angel into the liver. He was only 100 yards from my stand. I recovered the round ball, it was lodged between the skin and a rib bone it went threw.
I recently had the buck scored. Net score is 131 6/8 and after deductions goes 124 7/8. Reguardless of him not making book. The buck is my trophy of a life time

--> GOT MY BIG BUCK TONIGHT!!!

Well, I've passed on a MANY smaller bucks so far this season. "We were guessing the harvest was going to be down a lot more than it was this year."

Stewart provides details of the '07 season in an annual report that includes a county-by-county breakdown of the deer harvest. To obtain a complete copy of the report, go to dnr.IN.gov/press/2007_Deer_Season_Report.pdf

A widespread outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), a viral disease transmitted by biting flies, had Stewart anticipating a significant drop from the 125,381 deer harvested in '06. Instead, hunters recorded the third-best season on record and were within 1,100 of the all-time mark of 125,526, set in 2005.

"That's not to say (EHD) didn't affect harvests in some parts of the state," Stewart said. "The southwestern part of the state had a noticeable drop in harvest level, but that seems to have been made up elsewhere in the state."

That "elsewhere" was primarily in the central and west-central areas of Indiana, especially in a handful of counties that experienced EHD in 2006.

"Where EHD affected counties like Clay, Fountain, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan and Vermillion in 2006, (numbers) all bounced back in a big way in 2007," Stewart said. "In most cases, antlered harvests were back up to 2005 levels."

Stewart said that's potentially good news for such counties as Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Knox, Martin, Pike, Spencer and Crawford, where harvest levels dropped at least 20 percent from '06. He said deer that survive EHD exhibit an immune response that can be passed on to their young, providing protection if the disease occurs the next year.

Other highlights of the '07 season included the success hunters had in harvesting female deer in the latter part of the firearms season and the muzzleloader season, which Stewart said plays an important role in controlling deer populations.

"Antlerless deer are shot at a 2-to-1 margin over the last nine days of the firearms season, and 80 percent of the harvest during the muzzleloader season is antlerless, with the majority of those being does," Stewart said. "Without those efforts, the deer herds in some areas could rise dramatically."

Steuben was the top county for the third straight year with hunters harvesting 3,754 deer. Switzerland County was second at 3,259, followed by Kosciusko (3,003), Franklin (2,950), and Marshall (2,854).
