I was in scouting and made it to Star before the troop folded. When I had my own sons they both got into the Scouts and I ended up as an assistant Scoutmaster. My oldest boy made Eagle Scout and I had some good experiences with him and the Scouts. I went to Philmont Scout Ranch one summer and a backcountry camping trip in Yellowstone another.

Some of the Scouts in my Troop are now attorneys, two are West Point graduates (one stayed in army as career), another a jet tanker pilot for the airforce, engineers, etc. Good men all.

I was a scout but quit when I got to boy scouts. Had a great time doing it.

I made it to First Class before I got out in order
to have more time to play Pony Leege baseball.
Later, I also served as an Asst. Scout Master.
I really enjoyed my time with the Scouts and like
Cracker said in his post, learned a lot of things that
are still part of my everyday life.
Cracker, the other thing is the Scout Law:
"A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
courteous, kind,obedient,cheerful,thrifty,brave,
clean and reverent."
I had to look it up in my old manual.
Where did you live in NC?

I was in scouts about 35 yrs ago--got kicked out with a few others at a jamboree for something we got caught doing.Let's just say,unlike Bill Clinton,I inhaled.

I did little league that was my choice little league or scouts.... I guess I just liked baseball haha

Just wondering how many former Boy Scouts we have out there?

I wasn't an Eagle Scout, but I did make it up to Life and Order of the Arrow then was forced to move to Florida from North Carolina, where all troops I checked out were too sissified and my Pop wouldn't let me join...

I definitely owe a lot to Scouts though and figured there's probably a lot of other hunters and fishermen that were in the same boat.

As a friend reminded me recently, as a young kid, my Mom and Dad wouldn't let my bro and I play with guns, knives, or fire...but The Boy Scouts????? They let us have all three....

I found this and thought I'd share:

[b]Of any one hundred boys who become Scouts, it must be confessed that thirty will drop out in their first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure, but later in life, all of these will remember that they had been in Scouting and will speak well of the program.

Of the one hundred, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court judge. Twelve of the one hundred will be from families that belong to no church. Through Scouting, these twelve and many of their families will be brought into contact with a church and will continue to be active all their lives. Six of the one hundred will become pastors.

Each of the one hundred will learn something from Scouting, and all will develop hobbies that will add interest throughout the rest of their lives. Approximately one-half will serve in the military, and in varying degrees, profit from their Scout training. At least one will use it to save another person's life, and many may credit it for saving their own.

Four of the one hundred will reach Eagle rank, and at least one will later say that he valued his Eagle above his college degree. Many will find their future vocation through merit badge work and Scouting contacts. Seventeen of the one hundred boys will become adult leaders and will give leadership to thousands of additional boys.

One in four boys in America will become Scouts, but it is interesting to know that of the leaders of this nation in business, religion and politics, three out of four were Scouts.

This story will never end. Like the 'Golden Pebble' of service dropped into the human sea, it will continue to radiate in ever-widening circles, influencing the characters of men through unending time."

I think it rings true, particularly with more than 80% of those responding that they were Scouts. I imagine that last few percent who are hung up on Thin Mints will remember
