Visit from the big brown truck

The big brown truck stopped by my house Monday evening and dropped off this.

After a couple of days of rain I finally had the opportunity to open it.

Unfolded and set up, here is the inside.

Here it is sitting in the same location in my front yard, looking at the outside.

And here it is in the middle of a cut corn field.

I'm looking forward to trying this out in the woods tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll
see some deer so I can see their reaction (or lack of reaction hopefully).

Soils Helping Deer Antler Growth?

Here is a little information on soils and how they may help fit together part of the key when determining which new locations to scout and hunt for mature bucks that will reach their genetic potential.

Land surface shape and form should be considered into account. This is the slope (degree of incline or decline) and aspect (the compass direction a slope is facing). The slope and aspect of land surface will affect soil temperatures, moisture holding ability, affect rate of erosion, and decide movement of minerals and other particles from one area to another.

Vegetation affects soils by supplying organic debris to the soil. Grassland soils can have around twice the amount of organic matter compared to forest soils. The organic matter in grassland soils tend to be more uniformly distributed compared to forest soils. Grassland soils also tend to be less acid than forest soils.

The texture of a soil will affect the soil’s cohesiveness, aeration, drainage, and nutrient-holding capability. Here is a little information on soils:

Sand: Cohesiveness(Very little), Aeration(Very good), Drainage(Very good), Nutrients(Poor)

Silt: Cohesiveness(sticky when wet), Aeration(Average), Drainage(Average), Nutrients(Poor)

Clay: Cohesiveness(Very plastic), Aeration(Poor), Drainage(Very poor), Nutrients(High)

Loam: Cohesiveness(Good), Aeration(Good), Drainage(Good), Nutrients(Good)

Too much rain can lead to the leaching of ions and colloids. These are particles that play a key role in plant nutrition and soil chemistry. Waterlogged soils can cause poor aeration and lower the fertility of soil by lowering the ability to fix nitrogen.

Micro flora (algae, fungi, molds, and bacteria) capture atmospheric nitrogen that is vital for plant growth. Looking for types of habitats that include these micro floras; may mean deer are getting better nutrients in their diet and therefore may reach their genetic potential in antler growth.

Mycorrhizae are another key component of healthy soils. Mycorrhizae are important for disease suppression, drought protection, improved soil structure, increase leaf chlorophyll levels, and tolerance of nutrient imbalances. Undisturbed areas have plenty of mycorrhizae compared to disturbed sites. Disturbance from heavily compacted sites (such as some logging sites), areas that are treated with chemicals/pesticides, invasion by weeds, erosion, removal of topsoil, and land clearing are places where mycorrhizae are depleted; which causes plants to suffer.

Low intense fires can promote herbaceous flora, increase plant nutrients, and help healthy soil microbial systems. A severe/hot fire will do the opposite for a site.

Higher pH numbers around 8-14 indicate high levels of basic ions and soil alkalinity; which means low acidity. Colloids in this range will hold most of their mineral nutrients. The chemical environment in an area will determine if soil nutrients will be absorbed by plants. Most farm crops grow better around pH levels 6.5-6.8.

Soil erosion and nutrient depletion can be linked to intensive crop production (including tree farms), accelerated erosion, application of pesticides, and the uses of heavy machinery. Before humans took over the land; plants/trees would absorb nutrients from the soil and then would either drop their leaves or die, returning the nutrients back to the earth.

So know you know a few new things on what to look for when scouting for new areas to hunt deer. Here again is a short list of what to look for:

1. Clay or Loam soils
2. Neutral or alkaline pH soils
3. Soils with high levels of ions and colloids
4. Soils with high levels of micro flora and mycorrhizae
5. Areas with past low intense fires

I have noticed a lot more people have gotten the pro staff positions. Just out of curiosity, let's see who all got on and what state you are from. We can also use this thread to discuss what our team is doing.

So far I have talked to my regional pro staffer several times and we are in the process of getting our shirts made up. Hopefully in June we can actually start setting up at shows.

By the way, I am in TN.

Petition for Amending Measure 18 !!!!!

We finally have a legal documented petition out to help amend measure 18.

Jess Messner is in the process of getting the "cougar with dogs" law on the next ballot. He is need of some help. He can be reached at his office in Redmond (541)923-1309

I got a couple questions for y'all.............. new members are also asked to respond with any ideas and concerns.

1) In what ways do you think we can improve these forums here, that some of us call home?
What would you "like" to see changed, or done differently?

2) How do you think we can make the site more fun?

3) Is there something you would like to see more of, or less of?

4) Any other ideas, concerns, or general feedback??

Even as a moderator here, I don't have the "powers" to make changes..... but I can certainly ask/request for things that our members think would make things better for our forums. Though a request may not mean that certain things can or will be changed. Our hands are tied to a certain extent with the way the programming for the message board currently stands. But we would still like to hear your thoughts! Thank you!

I just want to say that I love Mossy Oak. I watch the Outdoor Channel all the time a matter of fact its one of two channels that I watch. I recently watched the Mossy Oak Full Frame episode. And I have to say that I was not to enthused. I have recently seen this fear of the animal right groups. Let me explain. During this episode they showed a hunter cleaning his deer. And when I say cleaning I don't mean gutting or skinning, I mean cleaning it with water and paper towels. Cleaning the blood off. The reason they gave was its done so that it doesn't upset the animal rights groups. It was explained that the blood upsets them. I find it kind of weird that blood will upset them but the picture of the dead deer that was just impaled by a arrow doesn't. I find it very, very sad that a hunting show that sponsors and has sponsors from so many different "HUNTING companies" is so worried about what the animal rights groups think. I have a question, do members of the animal rights groups buy Swhacker Broadheads? I dont think so. So why does anyone care what they think. The only reason these groups are around is because people listen to them. I was part of a group of hunters that these animal right people protested. They proceeded to come through public hunting area and scream and yell to prevent hunter from taking LEGAL game. Well in Missouri thats illegal. But they said that they were just walking and thats their right to go where they want. Well, a couple of days later I was able to fill my deer tag. So I loaded up the bloody carcass in the back of my pick up and parked it right in front of the animal rights group. Well that caused quite a problem, alot of yelling took place (mainly them) and the police were called. I just explained to the officer that I didnt bring it there to upset them I just brought it there because I can (it was on a hotel parking lot). My point is this, I cant see how a hunting show wants or even cares what the animal rights groups think. If you do upset them who cares. Do you really think that a hunter is going to be mad that you upset that group, I dont think so. I mean this problem is so upsetting that I am going to quit watching your show or anything. I will continue to watch and continue to buy your endorsed products. For Now.

Anyone heard of these losers? They go around to suspected hunting areas and sabotage hunters stands, blinds, ect... I seriously try to be a good Christian and give anyone and everyone a chance but this made me real mad. If I went out to my stand(s) which i've put ALOT of work, time and money into and found one of these asswipes sabotaging it, there would be some real serious problems. Luckily I hunt private land with a couple other guys, but by the sounds of it, these people would'nt care. Is there some law protecting us from this vadalism? I've got into some arguements with some animal right morons but this bs takes the cake!!

Untamed Sports TV......... they recently filled the cable spot on COX 713 HD in Baton Rouge, when the sportsman channel pulled out some weeks ago.

Sportsman Channel is now back on Pelican 113, COX in Baton Rouge.

Untamed Sports is aired all over the country in select markets on cable and satellite.

They have some really good hunting shows on it.

Was wondering if any one here catches it in their area?

We started out TV show on the coast of Mississippi this year on a small cable network.

We will now be airing on COX cable covering all of south and southeast LA. We have been picking up advertisers quiclkly and have all our air time covered for next year and have more advertisers working!

Just picked up one advertiser who is paying full advertising fee and is giving us 4 hunts to Mexico, all expenses but travel is paid. Be hunting doves, quail and ducks.

We are also working on advertisers to air our show in the Ark/La/Tex area on Fox 45 in 2010.

The Good Lord is watching over us!

That coupled with hard work and determination!

The Humane Society of the United States is behind this. You won't even be able to own hunting DVD's as you will be a felon. Think I'm kidding? I know that WC Fields posted something on this forum earlier this evening and it has been looked at and not one single response. What is wrong with people? I can't believe you are willing to allow this to happen and not even take action to stop it. Prove me wrong here. In order to make a difference, you must act and act now. The Great Anticipation Of Fall

My mind at work drifts towards the upcoming hunting season..........

Thoughts of sweating in bow season, hoping to get a shot on a deer, always with the promise of cooler weather getting here by the end of October!

Of whiteoaks droppiong acorns that make a loud "thump" when they hit the ground, and the anticipation of a deer coming in to steal a few before the "after dark" crowd comes to rob the ground of the sweet morsels.

Waiting on the first frost of the year, seeing the sun creep slowly over the tree tops, and the light refracting off the frost on the leaves, natures own laser show!

To hear a buck rubbing on a tree in the distance, seeing scrapes appear one morning, watching a doe come through the woods with her tail at half mast....... getting all nervous as you know a buck will be following her and show up sooner or later.

Waking up and finding water frozen in the bucket by the outside faucet...... getting in the stand today way before daylight..... hearing deer move in the dark around you, not knowing what they are.

Then after the sun rises, and the main morning chill is lessened, hearing the quiet "snick, snick" as a deer sneaks in from behind, pausing and moving slowly so the dry leaves do give away it's position.

The smile on a kids face when they kill their first deer, seeing the pride reflected in the childs fathers face.

Hearing your family members or hunting buddies tell the same jokes around the camp fire at night, year after year, and laughing just the same.

To listen to a nine year old tell everyone about this new hunting technique called grunting! And everyone listens to him with awe and excitement, telling him they appreciate the tip, all the while making sure the grunt call in their coat is hidden well from sight.

Turkey season is over, the dog days of summer are soon upon us, the thoughts of fall and deer season is the only things that helps us maintain our sanity.

Only four months, 15 days, and 18 hours and thirty minutes till bow season, Wait.....15 days, 18 hours, twenty eight minutes till bow season. no 15 days, 18 hours, twenty six minutes.....etc etc

Hello everyone....my name is brandon im new to this forum but not hunting so ya. Im currently on my 2nd tour to Iraq but about done. After this tour im heading back home for good to Indiana where I plan on god willing getting on a prostaff of some sourt. My over all goal with hunting is to make it my living but we will see. I feel real good about this season coming up got myself a new bow rig while i was home on leave and cant wait. I know that the season is getting closer and for some of us is just a few weeks out so I hope everyone is getting excited as I am.

Prostaff question

I have the oppurtunity to join the Mossy Oak Prostaff but am not sure as to what all to expect w/ it. I have sent an e-mail to the manager but he wasn't real clear with answer.
