A local church organization I belong to put a shoot together up at a club in central IL for last Saturday. I figure it sounded like a good time to hang with the crew for some laughs and fellowship, so I tagged along.

It was at a neat little club that does 6 day deer hunts and turkey hunts as well as the pheasant/chukar/bobwhite put and shoots. Had some real nice deer on the walls too.

The Group:

We set up the throwers when we got there to warm up on a few clays, after all, we done paid for these birds, can't be lettin' em go off to the wild as coyote food. I unleash the Benelli prepared to wreak havoc on some clay birds and find myself with little or no breakage. I was feeling ill...I mean, it been a while but daggone!

Now I see it, I got an IC in there and this hand had me feedin' the M1 #9 shot! So I proceeded to redeem myself by smoking them birds about 10' from the trap! I was lettin' em get out too far for that sand I was shootin at em.

We go out to the field and the guide lets the dogs out. We do the meet and greet with the guide and assure him we ain't gonna shoot his dogs and off we go.

First patch, the dogs were up ahead a flush a chukar. I watch that mug fly off and think, "well dang, if them hounds is nothing more than flushers, he can take that junk back to the rig!"

Ah, but then they settle in and get a nice point on a pheasant.

We all took turns after that with the shots and backing each other up. On my first shot my mechanics were still in the trap mode...when that bird got shoulder high I fired and all we could see was feathers! It was a nice shot I tell ya! Just kinda had a bit of picking when it came to cleaning him.

The shot:
Me and my backup on the final "prized bird". See the smoke coming out of the Benelli!

So, it was a fun day of hanging in the outdoors, cutting up and having a good time. One thing this club did was put out one real dark pheasant for each group. These things were beautiful. Hold them up to the sun and blues, purples, reds...really pretty. They were almost black in color when they got up and flew and well, our guy up missed, but we marked him. So at the end we trounced over to see if we could get another crack at him. Sure enough, the dogs pointed him. Another guy flushed him and I was primary gun. I was letting the bird get out a bit so as to not mutilate him...and then I fired. Almost at the same time, my back-up fired (didn't want to see him get away again....LOL). We both hit that mug and he dropped like a sack of rocks.

A good time was had, even if it was chicken from a can...
