Although deer season still lingers in some areas, for the bulk of America’s whitetail chasers the time for big bucks is over. And while you may be whipped from climbing trees, fighting bad weather, and waking up long before sunrise, now’s the best time to take stock of your important hunting gear.
Hard to do, I know, but that squeaky tree stand needs attention now, while you remember it.
Think about the old meat cooler that finally cracked and leaked into your SUV bed and made your wife oh-so-happy. Replace it now with a new one.
Those split, ancient-but-comfortable leather boots might be good for another season. But when they leaked during that long haul through foot-deep snow, it told you to at least apply some heavy-duty water sealer to the leather. Do it now, while you still remember.
That broken lug nut on the ATV trailer shouldn’t wait until next season to be repaired. Same is true with those tail lights, trailer tires and hitch chains and plug.
Does your ATV need repair? Winterizing? Inspect the lights, brakes, oil and gas shut-off. How are the batteries on the electric ATV cart?
Remember that fraying bow string, and the arrow fletches that were coming off? Dead of winter is a good time to replace them so they’ll be instantly ready next fall.
Lost gloves, caps, neck warmers and frazzled long-john underwear all can be replaced now - while the memory of their need still is forefront in your late-season thoughts.
