1) Pour the acorns in a tub and cover them with water. Remove all acorns that are floating and discard them.
2) Red oak acorns should then be layered in moist sand and refrigerated till spring time keeping the soil slightly damp for at least three months. Too much water isn't a good thing. Just keep the acorn from drying out. If only planting a small number of trees the acorns should be layered point down in a single layer, then add about an inch of sand, then another layer of acorns.
3) White oaks should be planted immediately, about two inches deep in pots filled with potting soil or in the field with the point of the acorn pointed down.
4) Red oaks should be removed from the cooler in early spring and planted point downwards about twice the depth of the acorn itself.
